typing Hebrew

Postby caleteu » 2016-11-27, 15:57

Hi! Here is a language lover who needs to do something to keep her brain active. I’ve toyed around with various languages over the years, then after learning Biblical Hebrew and teaching it as a correspondence course for several years, I decided to start learning modern Hebrew. Since I doubt I’ll ever need to speak it, I’m mainly interested in reading and listening. I love wrestling with grammar and dictionaries, so I am presently enjoying Edna Amir Coffin‘s „Lessons in Modern Hebrew II“
Besides my church and my family, my other love is my sewing machine.
One question: How to write Hebrew on this forum? Otherwise I use the BibleWorks macro, which also enables me to include the niqud, but it doesn’t transfer to the forum???
Yours, clt

Hi Caleteu,
There are people more qualified to answer your question, but they're not always around, so I'll have a go.
It would help to know what type of computer you have. If it's a Mac, no problem, you just add the Hebrew keyboard and toggle between languages with cmd+space bar.
If you're on Windows, it's more complicated. One easy way, however, is to type into Google Translate, using the keyboard function, then cut and paste. It's still not so direct and a real pain if you want to type various messages, such as chatting to someone on line.
There's also some help on http://www.hebrew.ecott.ch/#Keyboards

Actually it's just as easy with Windows. There is a native Hebrew input method for the Windows operating system you can enable. Personally I tend to use the Google input method for Windows however, which is easier to use still (at least for me). But neither of these allow you to type the niqqud. For that I would recommend the following keyboard:

I use it all the time to type out Biblical Hebrew in several different programs (Word, About, on the forum, etc.) It appears to work with Mac as well.

It doesn't appear to work on mine...

OTOH, this shows how to do niqqud in Mac: http://www.hebrewcollege.edu/online/hco ... eb-mac.htm :)

I see. It says on the site that it works with Mac, but I have no way of checking, as I have Windows.

Unless there is a different page for the Mac version. Idk.

I just so happened to check around and found this: https://www.petri.com/typing-hebrew-vow ... -windows-8
It's for Windows 8, but I imagine it would be similar for 7 & 10.
