Hebrew dictionaries

Postby Isasa31 » 2015-09-10, 0:21

I've realized that the most of hebrew dictionaries have the disposal of the entries very simple: The entry and then its meaning but lacks of : Subentries, grammar explanations, and examples. The subentries of actual dictionaries is limited and simple and they may have colloquial language,slangs..etc
I'd like to have a good hebrew dictionary that satisfy my needings.
Anyone knows a dictionary with subentries,examples..etc?

I don't, but are you talking about:
1. Bilingual Hebrew-English dictionaries
2. Bilingual Hebrew-X dictionaries
3. Monolingual Hebrew dictionaries

Not even Morfix has all the things you mention...

Yes, I know what you mean.
Hebrew "dictionaries" are more like lexicons than actual dictionaries. Unfortunately Hebrew lexicography is in a really poor shape.
The closest I could find to a real dictionary is : Oxford English - Hebrew dictionary (which has only one side ; it is not perfect though, a word like "already" has multiple meaning, can't only be כבר), and the Larousse French - Hebrew / Hebrew - French.
All other dictionaries are lexicons.

"lexicography is in poor shape" basically means that dictionaries are bad :)
You won't find the quality you can find with bigger languages like French, Japanese etc...

I've made a wrong answer so I apologize.I want to give you an example so you can see what i'm trying to mean about the entries of the hebrews dictionaries.
this is an entry of a spanish-english dictionary:

mandar:1.to order,to tell 2.to ask 3.to send 4.to rule,to govern 5.to leave,to bequeath mandar por-to send for mandar hacer algo-to have sth done.

As you can see in this dictionary the spanish word of "mandar" have many forms of usage and also subentries(mandar por, mandar hacer algo). So my question is if the modern hebrew word have many forms of usage or is limited?

Yes, modern Hebrew words have many usages. The best dictionary I have found for the purpose is Reuben Alcalay. Or if you want to go online, www.lexilogos.com/english has several dictionaries for modern Hebrew.
Yours, CAmbron
