oh, ok, thanks, nice to know :) another thing the book didn't tell me... still, i think that someone was out of his mind using both versions in the book without explaining.

Indeed, they should've explained that in the book... Anyway, just wanted to say I love cats! But if you're female - as your profile indicates - then maybe it should be "chatula" - a female cat; "chatul" is male. Not that it's really important of course...

Can anyone tell me why achshav is written like עכשיו and not like עכשב or עכשו ? Why the hell a yod?
Thanks in advance. :P

עכשו is also acceptable. I think adding a yod there ( = marking a vowel) is simply a way to indicate that following vav is pronounced as 'v' and not as a vowel. There are more words than this one which are written in that way.

They're both perfectly fine, for the reason BezierCurve stated, although the more common spelling is with the yud.

i.e אני גרתי בחולון. שם לכף אני לך לחוף
I tried to say i lived in holon, and for fun i'd go to the beach... i know this is wrongly worded, so help me! בבקשה

I guess other learners here may be able to suggest sites or other sources about Hebrew syntax and word order. I can just correct your sentences :P

First thing to note is that in Hebrew, adjectives come after the word they describe, rather than before it as in English (which we've had to learn at 4th or so... :P ).
It would probably be better to say, "I want to learn the correct word order", which would be translated "אני רוצה ללמוד את הסדר הנכון של מילים".
As for the second sentence, בשביל הכיף is a colloquial expression so it's expected you wouldn't know it. Also, we tend to say הולך לים (going to the sea) rather than לחוף in Hebrew.
Good luck with your studies and welcome! :D

Hope

Postby Cheri T » 2012-04-10, 18:55

Hi,
I'm new to Unilang and I could use some help. Not even sure if this the place I should be to ask this question; but I was praying that some one could help me that knows Hebrew.
I'd like to write "HOPE" in Hebrew (to Kheh leth) in Ps. 39:7 but can't figure out the letter from which I am looking at I'm believing that the letters I'm looking at our Tav, Lamed, Chet, ??? (this one I can't seem to figure out), Tav; and is this the right way to spell it in Hebrew?

I'm sorry for the intrusion but I've been searching on the web for 3 days. Can anyone help me.

Hi,

the word that is used there (in the 8th vers in my version) is תּוֹחַלְתִּי (tokhalti), which is a combination of the word you're looking for: תּוֹחֶלֶת (tokhelet = hope, expectation) and the possesive suffix (standing there for "my").

So, it's tav-vav-khet-lamed-tav (you can ignore the additional dots, it will be still correct).
Brejkam wszystkie rule.

Thank you so much, I've looked for 3 days trying to figure it out. The font that I've down loaded onto the computer made it look different for the vav it seems to be longer for some reason.
I can't seem to thank you enough for your kindness.

I'm just a common person not even a beginner but love, love, love the Hebrew language every since I've started to begin to understand the way GOD relates HIS word to His People. I just wanted to make sure I've gotten the right letters to what I was looking at.
Thanks Again for your help

No worries.

In case you want to have a tattoo out of it I guess it's better to wait for a native to confirm that though. Just in case.
