It's actually tólg(f) in most regions though the words tólgur(m), tólk(f and n) and tólkur(m) are used regionally.

Good to know, I had only found it as tólgur.

Heyridi, ég rak mig á ord sem fannst ekki í (gomlu) ordabókinni minni. Thetta er sjómennska en samt:

Hann sagdi líka frá ródrum í franskar jaktir og ríkmannlegum veitingum hjá fransmonnunum, thegar kafteinninn hellti á staup, og their gáfu honum svo nýmjólk: "og thá hellti hann á bekar".

Það eina sem mér dettur í hug varðandi orðið bekar er að það eigi að vera bikar en að sá sem ritaði þetta hafi verið flámæltur. Ég gæti haft rangt fyrir mér, en ég kannast allavega ekki við orðið bekar.

Jahá, þetta hvarflaði ekki að mér.
Mjög mögulegt þar sem hinn maðurinn er flámæltur - árönum kenner illör ræraðör.

Oh, this is interesting. Old Norse had the root tölg- [tʰɒɫɣ] with either masculine or feminine gender. So the lengthened ö is an "ó"? Great. This means the lengtheneing must have occured when ö was pronounced [ɔ], whenever that was.

The Swedish Minister for Defence, Sten Tolgfors, has an apparently u-umlauted form of the Swedish talg [tʰalj] 'tallow' in his surname. This is not so strange since he comes from the westernmost part of Sweden.

Sæll, loqu.

Sögnin er 'að sakna' og hún stýrir eignarfalli. Því væri 'I miss you' á íslensku 'ég sakna þín'.

Sæll

Maður kunni nóta 'langa' líka hátt á málefninu, eða?

langa 'want, long for'
sakna 'miss, regret'

How would the whole sentence be translated? My attempt (most likely wrong): "Upplýsingar þar um er ekki rétt."

"... eru ekki réttar" - upplýsingar is feminine pluralis. "Upplýsingar um þetta" seems to me more usable than with "þar um", but I'm not a native to decide which is better.

Hi, everybody :P
I'm interested in causatives and I wondered if you could tell me how Icelanders say :
"I walk the dog every morning",
"I had my hair cut"
and structures like "I make X do this".

My Icelandic isn't good enough for me to figure out what the Icelandic causatives are. Any help would be most welcome.

Causatives in Icelandic are made by using the verb að láta (to let) + verb + object:

I had my hair cut - ég lét klippa hárið mitt
I walked my dog - ég viðraði hundinn minn
I had my dog walked - ég lét viðra hundinn minn

You can compare this with other scand. languages in The Syntax of Icelandic by Höskuldur Þráinsson, p. 454.

Takk fyrir svarið þitt :D
(hope I got that right)

This sentence is interesting : ég viðraði hundinn minn.
I saw in the dictionary that "viðra" means "to air". So this sentence, in a word for word gloss, would be "I aired my dog" ?

Well that's how I learnt it. I don't have a dog or I've never had to walk one, let alone in Icelandic. So maybe you'd like to have a confirmation, but yes, that's how it would be glossed.
