Need help with bavarian/german dialekt translation

Postby phillip douglas » 2014-11-05, 15:06

Hello everyone,

I went to germany for a trip and heard a song that I liked but I do not speak bavarian ... it seems to be a german dialekt but I can't understand the lyrics.

Would someone be able to translate to english the meaning of the song please?

I would really appreciate it!

Here is the link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y-soCImMkk

Hopefully someone will be helping me understand that song! Thank you!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think we have any Bavarian-speakers in the forum.

I listened to part of the song and I can understand about half of what he says. It's a love song to a girl he met at a party. The title literally means "It was a nice time." To be honest, though, this is just about my least favourite type of music. I hated the song from the first notes and could barely stand to listen to more than thirty seconds of it.

I would say they might be geographically close to the Bavarian-speaking area, but what they are singing is still (watered-down) Swabian. It's the other end of Swabia, though, so even I have my problems understanding every single word.

I think I have most of it now, though I'm not sure about two lines. I'll leave the translation for another day (or somebody else). Here's what I could come up with as a transcription (I probably didn't stay as close to their dialect as I could have, but have some Standard German and Stuttgart Swabian influences in there - but that's probably good enough or actually even more helpful for your purposes):

I gang auf kei Party, auf der du bisch,
I will di net seha, weil i di vermiss.
I hoff jeden Dag, dass i di nit triff,

Mir zwei gheera zamm, ja des woiß i
vielleicht .... (?)
sieht mr dann, ob's en Wert hot
und kommt au mehr zamma (?)
Vielleicht bleibat mir für immer ausnander,
und schlimmer kann's mir nimmer ganga.
Die Liabe will oifach it ganga.
Um alles zu zwoit zu überstanda.

So schee, schee war die Zeit,
war die Zeit mit dir, so schee.
Schee war die Zeit, wooo,
so schee. schee war die Zeit,
war die Zeit mit dir, so schee.
Schee war die Zeit.

Die Zeit stoht still,
do hob i gmerkt, was dir fehlt, wie du fühlsch,
wo mir standet oder was i eigentlich will, was i bin.
Die Entscheidung hasch mir gnomma,
do war's scho z'spät,
so schnell werdat mir nimmer zammkomma.
unsere Zeit, die mir ghet han, werd i au vermissa.

so schee, so wunderschee,

I know very little Swabian and way less Bavarian, so a lot of this is probably not right, but I'll try anyway. :P I have no idea what "hammer" is supposed to mean in this song.

"I won't go to a party you're at.
I don't want to see you because I miss you.
I hope every day that I won't run into you.
It was far too nice with you for me to forget you.

We were together twice(??), yeah, I know.
Maybe it's not at all what I call it(???).
I let you go, and once more,
We'll see whether it's worth it,
And more will come together with that(??).
Maybe we'll stay apart(?) forever,
And it can never get worse for us.
Love will just take its course(?)
For the pair (of us) to endure everything together(??).

The times were nice, so nice.
The times with you were so nice, so nice.
The times were nice, wooo,
So nice. The times were so nice.
The times with you were so nice.
The times were nice.

Time stood still;
Then I noticed what you were missing, how you feel,
Where we stand or what I actually want, what I am.
We made the decision;
It was already too late then.
We'll never come together so quickly.
It was so nice with you; you just must know that.
I'll miss the times we had, too.

Survived a lot of ???, saw a lot of ???, too.
Sometimes it just never works and kind of hurts, too.

The times were nice, so nice.
The times with you were so nice, so nice.
The times were nice, wooo,
So nice. The times were so nice.
The times with you were so nice.
The times were nice.

The times with you were so nice, so nice,
So nice, so wonderful.
The times with you were so nice, so nice."

Your translation is very good, vijayjohn! :) Just one thing: "Mir zwei gheera zamm" = We belong together (in Standard German: "Wir zwei gehören zusammen").
And "hammer" is supposed to mean "haben wir". So it's "We have experienced a lot, we have seen a lot".

Unfortunately I can't help with the rest of the lyrics, I only recognized the phrases similar to the dialect I know (Franconian) but some phrases there are impossible to understand for me

Here a few lines that I would have translated differently:

I loss di ganga un noch er Zeit
I let you go, and once more
I let you go, and after a while,

und kommt au mehr zamma (?)
And more will come together with that(??).
And will come together more [often].

und schlimmer kann's mir nimmer ganga.
And it can never get worse for us.
And it can't get any worse for me.

Die Liabe will oifach it ganga.
Love will just take its course(?)
Love just doesn't want to go.

Die Zeit stoht still,
Time stood still;
Time stands still

Die Entscheidung hasch mir gnomma,
We made the decision;
You made the decision for me (lit.: "the decision you took away from me")

so schnell werdat mir nimmer zammkomma.
We'll never come together so quickly.
We won't come together again any time soon.

irgendwann goht's halt nimmer und duat au mol weh.
Sometimes it just never works and kind of hurts, too.
Eventually it doesn't work any more, and also hurts at times.
