Here's my attempt. Spanish is the only Romance language I can manage more or less, however some of my meagre knowledge about the others may have helped me here too, I can't tell this definitely.

1. Maria got lost in the castle quickly because it was constructed as a labyrinth.
2. The neighbour has bought herself a new house, near a coast and with a sea view.
3. ... strong trees ...
4. ... will help you in case you can't sleep.
5. The bear is the most dangerous animal in Transilvania.

Complete guessing here, based off Spanish and English, and a vague knowledge of the Indo-European languages.

Sleeping pills(?) help "something"(if you can't?) sleep.

The bear is the most dangerous animal in Transylvania.

It would be awesome if we tried this with Latin. (or tried something similar with the Germanic Languages)

French is my main Romance language, but I know Spanish and Catalan well enough though. I know this is targeted to Spanish speakers, but just in case you're interested how a French speaker would try to understand the following sentences:

1. Maria s-a pierdut repede în castel pentru că totul era construit ca un labirint.
Marie s'est perdue rapidement(?) dans le château parce que ("car" is the cognate, I think) tout était construit comme(?) un labyrinthe.

2. Vecina și-a cumpărat o casă nouă, aproape de coastă, cu vedere la mare.
? s'est acheté (sounds like Spanish "se ha comprado"/Catalan "s'ha comprat") une nouvelle maison près de la côte ? vert(?) la mer (can't be "mère").

3. Sora mea a desenat un arbore foarte frumos.
Ma sœur(?) a dessiné(?) un arbre fort ?

4. Somniferele te ajută dacă nu poți dormi.
Le rêver(? it sounds like Spanish "soñarlo"/Catalan "somniar-lo") t'aide de(?) no peux(?) pas dormir.

5. Ursul e cel mai periculos animal din Transilvania.
L'ours (sounds like Latin "ursa") est ? ? animal de Transylvanie.

Romanian indeed has developed to the point of being somewhat obscure for a French-speaker like me.

First things first, what is going on with the articles in this language?

I think Romanian does things more like Latin and uses noun declension. I'm guessing the system behaves sorta like the Scandinavian languages from the looks of it (indefinite articles and declined definites).

Which makes sense, since from Sora and Ursul you'd get "A sor" (French: La sœur) and "Ul urs" (French: L'ours) or possibly "Ul Ursu" (Spanish: El oso).

My translations, with annotations:

1. Maria s-a pierdut repede în castel pentru că totul era construit ca un labirint.
Maria and Pierre repeatedly cast pennies on the totally labyrinthine construction of the era. (I don't know why Pierre is lowercase -- I can hypothesize that Romanians are super-feminist. That also explains why Ursula in the fifth sentence is capitalized -- and there are no other male names in the corpus to suggest otherwise!)

Another puzzle: why the 'tru' in "pentru"? I believe it is to emphasize the fact that the pennies were not counterfeit. (I asked my Romanian friend about it and he told me that the word for a counterfeit penny is 'penfals', which certainly agrees with my hypothesis!)

2. Vecina și-a cumpărat o casă nouă, aproape de coastă, cu vedere la mare.
A vaccine, no matter how effective, can't compare to a new and proper house on the coast, especially overlooking the sea.

The sentence can also mean something else, when punctuated differently:
Vecina și-a cumpărat: "O casă nouă aproape! De coastă cu vedere la mare."
The vaccine said to his compatriot: "O new and proper house! The coast is overlooking the sea."

3. Sora mea a desenat un arbore foarte frumos.
My sore is designed to fortify one frumious tree. (frumious is a 'word' from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky) - I originally had 'smoky' instead of 'frumious' but that would be 'fumos' eh?
"Foarte" can also mean loud, in the musical sense -- and also the number between 39 and 41 -- but it's clear from context that it is meant to be a verb and not an adjective -- and it can't be a number because there's another number in the sentence, 'un' (one).

4. Somniferele te ajută dacă nu poți dormi.
Somniferous tea (slang for opium, perhaps?) can help Dacian couch potatoes sleep. (I originally had 'potatoes' instead of 'couch potatoes' -- but the latter sounds more idiomatic, and I guess "couch" is optional in Romanian.)

5. Ursul e cel mai periculos animal din Transilvania.
Ursula acted in Shakespeare's Pericles with noisy animals from Transylvania. (No offense meant to my Transylvanian brethren -- I couldn't help it. The original sentence had the words 'animal' and 'din' and I couldn't think of any other translation. I also don't know why Ursul lopped off her last letter -- maybe she gave it to Mary, who became Maria in the process!)

Romanian is easy, isn't it? All you need is a little imagination to understand it.
