Nu, skaidri. And welcome to Unilang to you as well :D For me, dainas are just an easy way to practise speaking Latvian, I like reading them aloud and learning them off, even if they don't have any great insightful and Latvian nationalists do exaggerate their importance. There isn't much learning material around... eventually, I would like to read something like Laima Muktupavela's Sampinjonu Deriba, but that won't be happening for a while.

I do like dainuskapis, yet as a native Latvian even I think of reading it as learning  So you haven't read Šampinjonu derība yet ? I have, It isn't bad, but not very good either.
Here's another page http://etext.virginia.edu/collections/l ... ndex2.html though I rather doubt it's easier than dainu skapis, other materials for reading http://www.ailab.lv/ (like fairy tales and some books) [s]I remember that I saw small collection of folksongs there, but can't find it anymore[/s] found it: http://www.ailab.lv/ai1/tautasdz/t00.htm
Mmm, for translating, how about this:
Āvu, āvu baltas kājas
Lecu dārziņā
Lecu, lecu dārziņā
Plūcu baltas rozes
Plūcu, plūcu baltas rozes
Pinu vainadziņu
Pinu, pinu vainadziņu
Liku galviņā
Liku, liku galviņā
Bridu jūriņā
Sacēlās rīta vējš
Nopūš vainadziņu
Tais' brālīti oša laivu
Brauc pēc vainadziņa
Oša laiva smaga laiva
Tā grimst dibenā
Tais' brālīti ziedu laivu
Brauc pēc vainadziņa
Ziedu laiva viegla laiva
Pārved vainadziņu
