Arabic learning sources

Postby nadi » 2009-12-24, 21:06

I couldn't find a related title and decided to start one, friends.
I am sure there are lots of sources to help us learn Arabic here and there; books, audio files, dictionaries, pc programmes, websites, etc. Why don't we share them here?

Here is an address: http://www.youtube.com/user/sherazed77

WordReference.com - Arabic Forum
http://forum.wordreference.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41
The most active forum on Arabic on the web. Good number of natives. 5 years running have made it rich in topics, specially good to learn expressions. Therefore, answers tend to not be either linguistics-oriented or according to Western books but closer to how MSA is taught in Arab countries. (This is both good and bad in various ways.) There are also many discussions on questions on Arabic vernaculars. As a small downside to the greatness of this place, it's completely question-answer oriented, so things like games or general discussions are a no-no with a much more strict moderation than here when it comes to off-topic comments.

Sakhr Ajeeb! عجيب‏ Dictionary
http://dictionary.sakhr.com/
Vowelled dictionary. Probably the best non-pdf Arabic-English dictionary online. The problem is that it tends to not give good direct equivalents but more like throws words in the surrounding semantic class probably in an attempt to define words better, neither provides plurals, maṣdar's, prepositions that the verbs rule, or vowelling of the Imperfect conjugation.

Desert-Sky.com - Arabic section
http://arabic.desert-sky.net/
Site created by user layla_n, a student of Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. Includes some wordlists according to some basic semantic groups (e.g., food, clothes), and address many basic Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic grammar points. The site is outstandingly good, specially as it provides all broken plurals, maṣdar's, vowelling of the Imperfect conjugation, and *sometimes* verb-ruled prepositions in its wordlists.

DictionaryBay.com - Arabic Dictionaries section
http://www.dictionarybay.com/
Collection of some unvowelled dictionaries. Nice to look up more refined words. Plurals, maṣdar's, verb-ruled prepositions, and vowelling of the Imperfect conjugation are not provided.

Mo3jam.com Dictionary of Arabic Vernaculars
http://en.mo3jam.com/
Sort of like the Arabic counterpart to English's UrbanDictionary.com, content is generated by users, explanations are in Arabic, it includes an example sentence for each word. Entries are classified by dialect from Maġrebi to ‘Iraqi. Lousy ‘Arabizy transcriptions are given for the pronunciation. It also includes a thumbs up and thumbs down button.

Google Books - Grammars, Arabic-English dictionaries, and a workbook
There are various good limited view books. This (grammar, 750 pages), this (grammar, 700 pages), this (grammar, 200 pages), this (dictionary, Arabic->English, 1200 pages, doesn't include some letters), and this (vocabulary workbook, 1000 words).
As for the ones with full view:
http://books.google.com/books?id=gWYUAA ... q=&f=false
Dictionary. English->Arabic. 450 pages. Published in 1882. Includes romanization, verbs include the vowel of the Imperfect conjugation but not the maṣdar and only sometimes the verb-ruled preposition.
http://books.google.com/books?id=Xp8CAA ... q=&f=false
Dictionary. English->Arabic. 1000 pages. Published in 1858. Includes romanization, verbs don't give the maṣdar and only sometimes the vowel of the Imperfect conjugation and the verb-ruled preposition.

Yamli.com - Editor
http://www.yamli.com/arabic-keyboard/
You type ‘Arabizy and it gives you various guesses for what you meant to write in Arabic script. The site also lets you download an add-on for Firefox so you can call the database from anywhere and type Arabic using ‘Arabizy.

Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4
http://www.brothersoft.com/microsoft-ke ... 79297.html
AMAZING program developed by Micro$oft that lets you create your own keyboard layout. Copy the letter you want from the Character Map and design your custom keyboard! Only use it if you're that annoyed of having to choose from Yamli's guesses. My personal recommendation for Windows users.

Academia Virtual Al-Madrasa
http://www.almadrasa.org/recursos/
Spanish site on Arabic. Most of it is not in Spanish though, since it mainly contains tables of conjugations and prepositions+pronouns. I specially recommend having a look at the Fonts ("Fuentes") section.
Sitio español sobre el árabe. Eso sí, la mayor parte no está en español, ya que principalmente contiene sólo tablas de conjugaciones y preposiciones+pronombres. Recomiendo especialmente mirar la sección de fuentes tipográficas.

Transliteration.org - Qur’ān
http://transliteration.org/quran/WebSit ... Fram2E.htm
Online transliteration and translation of the Qur’ān. It includes a beautiful recitation for each verse. =)

WordReference.com - Arabic Forum - Arabic Resources Thread
http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=63753
Collection of sources; some work, some don't. Really worth having a look at.

Online Broadcasts
http://www.mediabrave.com/category/4/Arabian-TV/1.html
Online streaming of various mainstream Arab channels. Islamic and News-related.

Google Books
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=WiQU ... &q&f=false
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=zjpb ... &q&f=false
A Grammar of the Arabic Language, the famous grammar book written by Caspari, with editions by W. Wright. 835 pages. Published in 1874.

Quranic Arabic Corpus - contains detailed grammatical information for every word of the Qur'an. Very useful resource for those who are using the Qur'an to learn Arabic!

Arabic Etymological Dictionary - this is a somewhat informal source, but it's the only etymological dictionary I have found for Arabic, or at least the only one that is freely available online.

Project Root List - the most comprehensive list of Arabic roots and derivative forms (with contextual examples from the Qur'an) that I've found online. Very useful!

Lisanularab forums

While I think we should try to promote discussion here (rather than on other forums), other sites like Lisanularab are great resources.

http://www.larousse.com/fr/dictionnaires/francais-arabe/arabe
Excellent dictionnaire du français vers l'arabe. À mon avis, le meilleur dictionnaire d'une certaine langue vers l'arabe en ligne (ou au moins jusqu'à présent).

I'm not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, and it's probably more useful for advanced Arabic learners, but it's still worth mentioning.

http://en.mo3jam.com/

a user-generated dictionary of colloquial Arabic (only), not excellent, an explanation is sometimes absent, but good to keep your colloquial vocabulary fresh in mind
