Telling time in Catalan

Postby Guillem » 2007-02-05, 3:04

The standard way of telling time in Catalan is rather unusual and may be surprising, or even confusing, to people who're learning it. That's why I decided to start this.
(nah of course the real reason is I saw a post with this title in the English forum )

It's actually pretty similar to the English way, just that it makes less sense and it may seem less logical to the rational mind lol It may seem tricky but it's really not, just keep in mind Catalans always seem to be looking forward to the following hour :P.

The basics
10:00
Les deu en punt.
Ten o'clock.

10:05

Les deu i cinc [minuts].
Five past ten.

10:15

Un quart d'onze. [literally: "a quarter of eleven"]
Quarter past ten.

10:30

Dos quarts d'onze
Half past ten.

10:45
Tres quarts d'onze.
Quarter to ten.

More fun:
10:20
Un quart d'onze i cinc [minuts]

10:33
Dos quarts d'onze i tres [minuts]

But:

10:55

Les onze menys cinc [minuts].

10:25

Dos quarts [d'onze] menys cinc [minuts].

Of course you can also be cheeky and use the good old "les deu i vint" (10:20) and you'll be understood anyway.

Hope it wasn't totally useless

Afortunadament ací baix utilitzem la forma simplificada :P   Si no quan em demanaren l'hora estaria 10 minuts per dir-la jejeje

Luckily, here (in Valencia) we use the more simple way  If not i would last ten minutes to answer if someone asked me the time

This is not that dissimilar to German:

10:15
Viertel elf
(quarter eleven)

10:45
drei Viertel elf
(three quarters eleven)

Oh, you can tell time in that way? In German I'd have said "Viertel nach zehn" and "Viertel vor elf".

Yes, you can, it's a regional difference. People who use "Viertel nach zehn" and "Viertel vor elf" usually find the other system confusing at best and often don't get it at all. It happened several times at uni that someone used the "drei Viertel elf" system and most were extremely puzzled.
Please correct my mistakes!

As far as I know only people from the west of Germany say "Viertel vor" and "Viertel nach".
Well I am from Thüringen (east) and sometimes use it too and then people who dont know me make a strange face and ask me "Are you a from the West??" xD

In Austria the system "Tres quarts d'onze / dreiviertel elf" is used in the east, the west uses the other one... and I know people from West Germany who are unconfortable with it - so the usage seems to make a big patch rug...

Wow!!! This explanations about usage in German speaking countries is very interesting!! What about Switzerland? Does anyone know how they tell the time? I mean in the "drei Viertel/tres quarts" way or not... maybe a goog question for the German Forum.

Danke!

Gràcies!!

Núria

Even in West Germany there are regions where you say "drei Viertel elf". For example in Württemberg.

Dos quarts [d'onze] menys cinc [minuts].

Now see, we were taught "Faltem cinc minuts per dos quarts de quatre" for 3:25. Would people stare at me as strangely as I imagine they would, or is it perfectly valid as well?

Sounds perfectly correct to me :) Where are you learning the language?

What I love the most about Catalan way of telling the time, is the concept of "half a quarter" (mig quart).

Molts catalans diuen "merci" :)

Deu menys quart és incorrecte, però la majoria de la gent fa servir aquest sistema incorrecte, copiat del castellà. Hauria hagut de dir tres quarts de deu.
