Hola Set, moltes gràcies!

I suspected that the subjunctive might be extremely complicated, what about the conditional, though? From what I've seen, it looks to me that it should be in if-then sentences (although I may have basically made that up) and sometimes I feel like I should be using it when it isn't an if-then sentence, although it does make sense that that would be completely wrong...

Another thing that confuses me is the lack of a word for 'it' as a subject, obviously because I'm a beginner I am very much writing in English in my head then translating it - so sentences where 'it' is the subject end up being restructured in ways that don't make sense...but I'm guessing this is where demonstratives això and allò come in?

De res.

Conditional is used pretty much like English. "Això seria molt bona idea" = that would be a good idea. "Què faries si tinguessis diners?" = what would you do if you had money. I'm pretty sure that you can't use 'if' and conditional in the same clause, just as in English.

I wouldn't say that the subjunctive is extremely complicated. Do you have a background in Spanish? It's more or less (totally?) the same thing. It can be difficult getting used to the idea of subjunctive coming from English, but at least with Catalan it's easy to form.If you can't find good explanations for it for Catalan, then look it up for Spanish. "Què vols que faci" = what do you want me to do (lit. that I do)?. Actually thinking of the subjunctive as meaning "that I do" (or whatever verb) can be useful sometimes, although not always.

Some other examples:
Dubto que pugui venir.
Crec que l'he vist ja
No crec que l'hagi vist
Fés el que vulguis (here it also gives the meaning of 'whatever you want')
Vull conèixer una dona que sigui guapa (i.e. any woman who is guapa)

'It' is often unnecessary, much like the other pronouns.
És clar = it's obvious, clear
No cal fer-ho = it's not necessary to do it
Em sembla bé = it seems good (to me)
Això va ser un cop baix = that was a low blow/below the belt (especially with emphasis on això)

Btw, if youre in London why don't you try finding some Catalans to meet up with? There are hundreds if not thousands of them there now.

I think part of the confusion is that all these different pieces of information are being put into one word - I am basically just coming from English - I have GCSE German and that's it xD

I've not really thought of how the conditional is used in English, is it literally just "would <verb>" constructs? So seria = (subject) would be, voldria = (subject) would like, cantaria = (subject) would sing, etc.? I think the idea of an if-then construct was coming from something like "If you would like to eat, (then) we could go to a restaurant?" - so while any conditionality might not be coming from the 'if', is it possible that it might coincide with it, i.e. "Si voldries menjar, podríem anar-ho a un restaurant"...and I've just realised that podríem is essentially 'we could', so I'm still trying to figure out what the conditional actually is...I wish we had been taught these things in English language, as this is something that English actually has!

To be fair, I haven't got far enough into my Catalan course to have been taught the subjunctive properly yet, and I'm pretty sure it gives a decent explanation somewhere down the line, so I should probably look at that to figure out what I'm doing instead of chucking in random subjunctive verbs everywhere...
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "that I <verb>", though. I might be weird/incorrect for doing this, but I often think of 'que' as 'that' (depending on the context), so literally translating, to me, "crec que l'he vist ja" becomes "I believe that I have seen him now", which doesn't really distinguish from "no crec que l'hagi vist" which would become "I don't believe that I have seen him", and the subjunctiveness of haver is sitting there confusing me with magic and sparkles :P

I've never really thought of the lack of 'it' being a problem in isolated sentences, but when you're talking continuously and you've got a few subjects and objects going that you're kind of talking about all at once, I feel like it's a bit confusing to not have any kind of 'it' there. But when I think about it, having the word 'it' doesn't actually solve any confusion, it just tells you that what's being referred to is singular 3rd person neuter...so I imagine that's something I should get used to eventually.

It would be nice to try and meet up with some Catalans some time, but my Catalan is nowhere near good enough at the moment! My speaking and listening are even worse than my writing, and I wouldn't wish to inflict that on anybody in its present state xD

(*) volguessis in Central Catalan, volgueres in Valencian.

You should keep in mind that can is a special verb in English so you can't take it as a model for comparing the way you did. Keep in mind can has no conditional (there's no we would can; if anything, you'd have to say we would be able to, and it means the same as we could anyway). Conditional in Catalan roughly corresponds to English would + infinitive.

I'm sorry, I think I might have done more harm than good with my explanations. Ok ignore what I said about "that I ..." with subjunctive. I think you just need to wait until you study it in your book and then when you feel like there's a specific point you don't understand we can try and explain it more.

You're right about them not teaching us enough English grammar in school, it would have made learning foreign languages easier. In the end I fumbled around with German and Spanish at school, started to get to grips with some grammar, learnt a bit about English grammar and then finally started to understand foreign grammar, although even now I realise things about English which I hadn't thought of before

As loqu said the conditional in English is 'would + infinitive', but the exceptions are the modal verbs like can - could, shall - should, must (one form) and some others. Fortunately Catalan doesn't have modal verbs, at least not in the Germanic sense. If you know that 'menjaria' means would eat, then almost all other verbs follow that pattern. 'Podria' would translate as could or would be able to. 'He de' is 'I must' or 'I have to' so the conditional is 'hauria de' meaning something like I should or I would have to. (There's also 'deuria', but I wouldn't worry about that yet).

English has another word which is a bit of an exception. 'Would like' is technically conditional, but more often than not it's used in order to be polite (nicer than want) and thus doesnt really act like a conditional (in any case it should be translated as "agaradaria"), so I wouldn't use this verb as an example. Although some people do use 'would' after 'if', I doubt that you do (Im guessing we have the same dialect). So you wouldn't say "If I would eat this (then) I would be sick", right? It should be "If I ate this (then) I would be sick". In Catalan it's the same, the conditional cannot come after if. It's tricky though because 'ate' here would be translated as the past subjunctive which I'm sure you haven't studied yet. It would be "si mengés això, estaria malalt".

If you're still not 100% sure, maybe you should try writing some more sentences and we can correct your mistakes.

Moltes gràcies, Set i loqu, esteu molt útil!

[hide]Thank you very much, Set i loqu, you're very helpful! I'm going to write this in Catalan, but I'll give you it in English too, like before.

Firstly, English schools are useless (I hear that they're among the worst in Europe!), because I only learnt basic grammar, e.g. what is a verb, etc., and further grammar is self-taught. The result is that I don't know if an English word is regular, and the things that are not salient in English, like the conditional and subjunctive, are still very difficult, but of course, I would like to be able to use them! However, I think I understand the conditional much better now :)

I've learnt 'haver de', but not 'hauria de', but it makes sense.

Set, I understand your example, it makes a lot of sense; the example I gave before is one of politeness, not of the conditional mood. However, I learnt that in a shop, e.g. a greengrocer's, I can say 'vull un quilo de pomes' or 'voldria un quilo de pomes', but the latter is more polite...are there other cases like this, or not?

On an unrelated note, because you're from the UK, Set, I think you'll understand this. In falling diphthongs ending in -u, is the sound like a Cockney/Essex -ll? E.g., is 'beu' in Catalan like 'bell' in Cockney/Essex English?[/hide]

Millor, em sembla que ho has entès bé.

Em pots donar uns exemples, si us plau?

veure, veiem, veia
caure, caiem, queia
traure/treure, traiem, treia
