Unfortunately, Daniel, there are no courses online. :(

Hopefully, this'll change.

I too am looking for an online course in Farosi. How should I approach this since I am a beginner?

Thank you.

Mulder-21 wrote:"Eg eri ungarskur."

This isn't wrong, yet it's right either, since 'ungarskur' is an adjective, and in this case, when speaking about nationalities, Faroese uses a noun, so the right way would be:

- OR -

Eg eri lesandi úr Ungarn (I'm a student from Hungary).

Alternately, you could say:

Eg eri ungverji.

Yet this word is old, and I believe it's only used about historical Hungarians and historical Magyars.

But once more: Welcome. :)

This is interresting.
In Icelandic you can use the adjective and the noun, both are right.
"Ég er Ungverji" and "Ég er ungverskur".
We use upper case in the noun.
Sat þar á haugi
ok sló hörpu
gýgjar hirðir
glaðr Egðir;
gól um hánum
í gaglviði
fagrrauðr hani,
sá er Fjalarr heitir.

er > ir > ið
er -> sem -> sum

Well, if we speak about etymology, the Faroese "ið" descends from Old Norse "ið/eð" (surviving in mod. Icelandic "hitt_eð_fyrra" - "the year before last") which is probably the same word as "et" in Latin (so it looks like there were 3 relative conjunctions in Old Norse: er, ið and sem).

I´m sorry if I go back to this old post but I really don´t get it when i have to use the preposition "frá", and why is so high the % of mistakes when it is used ??

Any help?

Hi, ikkon. :)

Well, here's the deal. Prepositions dealing with locations come in pairs. In Faroese these are:

in - from: í - úr
on - from: á - av
by - from: við - frá

Faroese has very strict rules that these are the pairs, and you can't mix them. This is why 'frá' is wrong most of the times in Faroese, since the opposite of 'í' is 'úr' and not 'frá'. As is, these are the examples of 'við - frá' I can think of right now:

við Gjógv - frá Gjógv (Gjógv)
við Norðskála - frá Norðskála (Norðskáli)

Further note: two Faroese villages have the preposition in them:

innan Glyvur
undir Gøtueiði

When saying that people are from these village, the former stays the same, while the latter slightly changes:

Hann er innan Glyvur - He's from 'Innan Glyvur'
Hann er undan Gøtueiði - He's from 'Undir Gøtueiði'
Gløgt er gestsins eyga. (Føroyskt orðafelli)
Wise is the stranger's eye. (Faroese saying)
L'occhio dell'ospite è acuto. (Proverbio faroico)
Hosťovo oko je múdre. (Faerské uslovie)

mmmmm, so these 3 pairs are always together? on writing and oral forms?

 i´m trying to figure this out, so i will find this pairs as a grammatical structure?

If it is, then i should learn this grammar rule inmmediately.

Hi all!

I've bought a book and a CD on Amazon: Färöisch Wort für Wort. It' includes the basics of Faroese that you might need as a tourist. The language is by the way German.
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/389416350X/

Unfortunately I do not have too much free time, and the language is not easy to learn alone, so I just try to memorise some things while I'm travelling to my job by tram...

I haven't had a look at this forum for a long time, and as I see, Mulder is no longer the only native speaker here! :)

Take care,

Antissimo

That sounds great, Antissimo. I hope it will work out well for you.
Also, please ask, if there's anything you are in doubt about at all.

Antissimo,

Nei, eg havið faktiskt ongantíð hoyrt um hasa heimasíðuna, takk fyri slóðina.
No, I've actually never heard of that website, thank you for the link.

Og ei eg havi tveir spurningar:
- how do you say "please correct my errors"?
- how do you say "How do you say in Faroese ...?"

Please correct my errors - "Vinarliga rættið mínir feilir," or "Góðið rættið feilirnir hjá mær." (Less formal)
Note: "rættið" is in the plural. If you are adressing a single person you would say "Vinarliga rætta mínir feilir" for the first version. For the second, you'd either say "Góða rætta feilirnir hjá mær," if you are talking to a woman or you would say "Góði rætta feilirnir hjá mær," if you are speaking with a man.

How do you say in Faroese - "Hvussu sigur man ____ á Føroyskum?"

You are correct, Phileas, but you have a lot of typological and grammatical errors:

"Please correct my errors" is 1: "Góðu/vinaliga, rættið mínar villur/feilir" (in written/official Faroese 'villur' (sg. 'villa') is preferable, or 2: Góðu/vinaliga, rættið villurnar/feilirnar hjá mær.

The article is -nir for nominative (hvørfall) and -nar for accusative (hvønnfall)

Phileas wrote:How do you say in Faroese - "Hvussu sigur man ____ á Føroyskum?"

Languages and nationalities are never capitalised in Faroese: "... á føroyskum?" 'Man' is also greatly discouraged. In this case you could replace 'man' with 'tú' or 'ein' or you could instead say:

"Hvussu eitur ____ á føroyskum?"

Góðu føroyingar,

hvat er [the difference] millum ein eftirskúla, ein studentaskúla og ein miðnámsskúla?

(Og hvussu eitur 'difference' á føroyskum?)

Takk fyri,

Fyrst av øllum: 'difference' = munur, kallkyn (muns, munir)

Ein miðnámsskúli er tað, ið svarar til nøkunlunda High School í USA. Tað finnast fleiri sløg, men í Føroyum eru fyrst og fremst tríggir stórir miðnámsskúlar: Studentaskúlin, Handilsskúlin og Tekniski skúli. Studentaskúli er tað, ið fólk á Meginlandinum høvdu kallað 'gymnasium'/'gymnázium' ella okkurt sovorðið. Munurin millum miðnámsskúlarnar er mær vitandi tann, at studentaskúlin leggur dent á bókliga umhvørvið, handilsskúlin á tað handilsliga og tekniski skúlin á tað handaliga (tí eru t.d. eisini hárfríðkarar knýttir at honum). So, at miðnámsskúli er eitt yvirheiti fyri skúlar á 'gymnasium'-støði.

So er tað eftirskúlin. Eg dugi ikki ordiliga at siga fyri vist, hvat hann er. Tað nærmasta, ið kemur mær til hugs, er kostskúli ('boarding school'), men eg eri slettis ikki vísur í hesum.

Um nakar veit betur, so sigið endiliga frá; hetta er bara tað, ið eg havi hugsað meg fram til, soleiðis sum eg havi fingið tað frágreitt frá ymsum fólkum.

Ja, hasin fyrsti setningurin er eitt sindur torførur, men eg hevði sagt tað soleiðis:

Eg dugi enn ikki so væl føroyskt.

'Eg' og 'enn' kundu eisini skift um pláss.

havde = hevði
au = eisini

Tú skrivar tey (de), men tú meinti helst tit (dere).

Hevur tú funnið Norsk- Færøysk ordbok hjá Egil Lehmann (ella okkurt sovorðið eitur maðurin)? Hon er frá eina ferð í 80'árunum, men hon skuldi verið góð.

Og Jól í Svingi finnur tú bæði á Portalinum og á heimasíðuni hjá Kringvarpinum. Á Portalinum velur tú SVF SENDINGAR, og har fært tú ein lista við øllum sendingunum, tú kanst downloada. Á heimasíðuni hjá Kringvarpinum velur tú so Netvarp -> Jólakalendarin 2008, har finnur tú sendingarnar.

How do you pronounce "pharaoh"? I've always said /'fɛɹoʊ/. If you actually use [eɪ], you may be more Texan than you think. :P
