Hi! I'm very interested in learning some Faroese. I have some textbook, audios etc. But now I'm happy, cause I've supposedly found a place where someone would help me to solve my .

Well, let me introduce myself. I'm Pīteris and I at Scandinavian Studies in Gdansk, PL. One of my subjects is the History of Scandinavia. My task is to write some elaboration. I chose "The history of Faroese Islands in the XXth century". And here is my question - does anybody know about any books about it? It may be in English, German, Danish (I learn it at the uni) or even in Faroese, if everyone could give me a leg up about learning the language. I would be grateful if you helped me.
Have a nice weekend!

We are talking in the Nordic chat right now, and we wondered if there is a list of prepositions + what cases they govern in Faroese? Much like the famous German ones:

How do you say "Which one do I choose?" in Faroese?

Hví spyrt tú eftir umsetingum á trimum ymsum norðurlendskum málum?

Why do you ask for translations in three different North-Germanic languages?
Swedish (sv) native; English (en) good; Norwegian (no) read fluently, understand well, speak badly; Danish (dk) read fluently, understand badly, can't speak; Faroese (fo) read some, understand a bit, speak a few sentences; German (de) French (fr) Spanish (es) forgetting; heritage language.

I realise, that some of these questions have been up in the air for several months, but it might be beneficial still for me to answer them after so long a time, so let's see:

Well, gwrhkhsh: When I learned Slovak, dropping the 'ja/ty/on' etc. was hard for me, but it's really something you quite quickly get used to, so, don't worry. Tað/hetta is pretty much 'to' in Polish.

Hetta/tað er ein skúli. - To szkola.

But 'tað' is also used as an indefineable subject, especially when speaking about abstract stuff, like the weather.

Tað regnar/kavar. - Pada. (I guess?)

But any simple rule? Well, this maybe. :) But not sure.

Cesare:
Góðan dag, fólk. Orsaka meg av at reypa, at eg dugi væl føroyskt. Eg megni* (not incorrect per se, but dugi is always better) ikki væl at tosa føroyskt, men eg vil at nýta mitt føroyskt, og eg vóni at verða godt í føroyskt. (probably: men eg vil tosa tað, so eg læri tað betur) So, um eg havi mistøk, høvdu tit vinarliga kunna rættað meg? Eg havi nógv mótmælat(?, spurningar?); í fyrsta lagi, skilja fólk í Føroyum skilja svenskt? Takk.

Ja, flestu fólk skilja svenskt, men svara helst aftur á donskum, men av tí at sviar ofta ikki skilja danskt so væl, so kemur fyri, at føroyingar og sviar tosa enskt sínamillum.

gwrhshkh again:

hvat = co, hvussu = jak, so:

Hvussu er veðrið í Føroyum á vetri? Í Póllandi hava vit nógvan vind og (nógv) regn, men tað er ikki so kalt sum í fjør. Og í tykkara londum?

Veðrið í Føroyum á vetri kann vera skiftandi, men vanliga kólnar umleið oktober/november mánað, og fyrsti kavin kann koma so tíðliga sum síðst í november ella so seint sum í januar. Januar, februar og mars plaga at hava kavarok við sær og ofta eru ódnir. November og desember kunnu eisini hava ódnir við sær, eins og vit upplivdu í t.d. 1988 (jólaódnin, 22. desember 1988) og í 2011 (Berit/Xaver).

Pīteris: Well, there are a few books around, but I doubt any of them will be in any other language except in Faroese. If this is no problem for you, I might be able to find some for you. Btw.: Laipni lūdzam. :)

Mirë se vjen, aixotothom. :)

Which one do I choose? = Hvønn/Hvørja/Hvat/Hvørjar/Hvørji skal eg velja? (Msg/Fsg/Nsg/MFpl/Npl). I guess Albanian has some similar choices when it comes to pronouns and gender and number?

Hello,
I need to know what "Carbonic Acid" means in Faroese. xD
Since "carbonic acid" means "Kohlensäure" in german and its my Username, I would like to fill my signature with this word in my favorite languages.
Is it Kolsýra?

I also would be interested in this, I can read Faroese perfectly fine so that is no problem. I already looked at some "Faroese grammar for Faroers" but they didn't have anything about case governing even though they covered all the other parts of grammar.
English: native. Swedish: C1 level. Icelandic: B level, but forgetting how to write. Faroese: C in understanding, A in writing. Japanese: Just starting to learn.

An Introduction to Modern Faroese gives a thorough explanation of the Faroese prepositions, what cases they govern, common expressions where they are used, as well as exceptions or variations of the use of cases. Check that out people. I tried to summarise this in a document written in Norwegian, but it was close to a literal translation into Norwegian of the book.

In Faroese some prepositions govern the accusative, some both accusative and genitive, others dative, and finally accusative or dative depending on the context. If people still are interested, I can try to make a list on the cases with explanations later today :D

So I've been getting myself to listen to more Faroese music lately, and, no surprise, I've run into confusing lyrics.

In "Kanst tú siga farvæl", the second line is "og longst at sloppið vekk", and I can't at all figure out what verb "longst" is from. I know it's a supine meaning "longed", but I can't figure out what verb it's the supine of.
EDIT: nevermind, it's from leingjast, right?

Then there's "og teir kjansir sum tú fekk". Why isn't that "fekst"?

And lastly, I can't figure out the meaning of "leggja heimin fyri tínar smáu føtur". Like, I don't know if "fyri" has "heimin" or "føtur" as an object and I don't know if this is actually using some idiomatic meaning of "leggja fyri".

Also, unrelated, but what's the most natural way to say "very" in Faroese? Væl? Nógv? Something else?

Takk. :)

Longst is indeed the supine of leingjast (to be longing for).

asgarnian123 wrote:Then there's "og teir kjansir sum tú fekk". Why isn't that "fekst"?

In some Faroese dialects, the verb tenses for the second and third person singular are actually one and the same. Here's an example with the verb at fara (to go, travel):

Eg fari
tú fer
hann/hon/tað fer

Roskur told me that this is common in Suðuroy.

asgarnian123 wrote:And lastly, I can't figure out the meaning of "leggja heimin fyri tínar smáu føtur". Like, I don't know if "fyri" has "heimin" or "føtur" as an object and I don't know if this is actually using some idiomatic meaning of "leggja fyri".

at leggja okkurt [framman]fyri einhvønn = to lay something in front of someone
at leggja heimin fyri tínar smáu føtur = to lay the world in front of your small feet

When you "have the world at your feet", you are successful, popular, and/or able to accomplish your goals.

I hope this answer helped to clear some things up.:)
I'd also like to thank Roskur for helping me out here - takk fyri hjálpina!

~jakip, try checking out the Unilang wiki. I posted a lot of stuff about the grammar a few years ago. You should definitely find something useful there.
