So Fávnir is Fafner, and Sjúrður more or less Siegfried (or vice versa ), but who is Grani?

No, these 'elaborate' words, as you say, are pretty much all archaisms. Today, we say 'kríggið í Irak', 'kríggið í Afganistan' etc.

However, 'á leikvøllum' is sometimes used for sports. A pitch for any ball game at all (be it football, volleyball, badminton, tennis etc.) is called a 'vøllur' (field). Of course, when radio hosts become poetic, they might refer to a football-pitch as 'vígvøllur' (battle-field)

Most Faroese people today won't know what 'randargný', 'tambar', 'benjardøgg' etc. mean. They'd have to consult the dictionary to find out, that these words mean 'battle', 'bow' and 'blood'

Also, Hunef, 'leikvøllur' means more like 'playing field' or 'game field'. In chess, a move is called 'ein leikur', so when it's used for battle songs, it refers to a chess table too. (that being strategy)

And no, as far as I know, no 'battle' has occured in the Faroes since... well, maybe since the Floksmenn (early 15th century) although I'm not sure exactly how many swords and things like that were used then.

Yeah, leikvøllur as 'game field' would be kind of valid in Swedish as well ("lekvall"). In any case, a vall is used for a field where you play some kind of game. For example, the football stadium Hofvallen [ˈhoːʋˌʋalːən] in my home city is a vall:

Hofvallen (Östersund), Jämtland's national football arena

In practice, the new word spelplan rather than the archaic lekvall is used. (spel = lek, plan = vall.)

I bought 'Ragnarok' and intend to get 'Eric the Red' soon. Anyway, the tool I used to extract the MP3 is called MPlayer, and it's free software in either sense of the English word 'free'.

P.S. - I have the limited edition Ragnarok with the Irish instrumental and the other track, Valhalla!!!
