Georgian etymology - foreign words

Postby nicofr » 2008-09-01, 8:47

Hi, I'm wondering how much vocabulary in georgian cames from their incading neighbor's language.

I remenber that :
pikri (to think) orginates from fkr (arabo-persian) (~ to think)

And recently I was wondering if "imedi" (hope) originate from persian "âmid" (hope)?

Here the list of all such words that cames from my georgian book, please feel free to add other ones :

skola (school) <- ru <- gr
aptiaki ("pharmacie" in french) <- gr apteka
shakari (sugar) <- gr sakhar
konverti ("enveloppe" in french) <- fr couvert
araKi (alcool) <- tu/ar arak
baRi (garden) <- fa bagh
bazari (market) <- pe bâzâr
djibe (pocket) <- tu ceb <- ar
ekimi (doctor) <- tu/fa <- ar hakim (doctor)
eltchi (ambassador) <- tu elçi
kalami (writting feather) <- ar qalam
kutcha (street) <- fa kutche
parda (curtain) <- fa parde
pilpili (black pepper) <- fa/tu felfel
poladi (steel) <- ar fuladh
puli (money) <- fa pul
karkhana (plant) <- fa karkhâne (work-house)

Yes, but the persian word is "omid".
There's a good summary of Iranian influence on Georgian in Encyclopaedia Iranica. (just search for "Georgia" and then click on the appropriate link).
