Problems with pronunciation

Postby Partisan » 2008-01-10, 3:12

And the following words begin with eight consonants:

* გვფრცქვნი (gvprtskvni), "you peel us"
* გვბრდღვნი (gvbrdgvni), "you tear us"

How pronunciate words with EIGHT consecutive consonants?

it's simple, you don't.
georgian has rules concerning "harmonic clusters", which are separated from other non-harmonic consonants/clusters by epenthetic vowels, which you can read about in aronson's grammar.

g'vp'rtsk'vni
g'vb'rdg'vnis

or something like this.

That's right. It's the same thing in Armenian since we also have words such as "tchkhrmtchtgvil" but we actually pronounce it with a slight schwa in-between some of the sounds, so it'll be like:

tch@-khr@-mtch@-gvil

But in armenian exist one letter with schwa sound, right?

Yes, it is also an independent letter, but it's mostly used at the beginning of the word. Although it does not show up in the orthography, a schwa sound also serves to make very large consonant clusters more manageable, but it's not really a full schwa sound as it would be if there were a letter.
