[flag]ro[/flag] Deșteaptă-te, române
[flag]ru[/flag] Russian anthem
[flag]en[/flag] Land of Hope and Glory (not their official anthem, though)

My favorite anthems are:

South Africa
Australia
New Zealand
France
Japan
Russia

I agree with the people who think our anthem should be "America the Beautiful."

The funny thing is I like nice patriotic songs from my country more than our anthem. I'm not really in mood to recount my favorites, but here are some that would make better anthem (than this)
Tik un tā
Daugav' abas malas
I think one of these two would make better national anthem (mostly for better words, to start with - I don't like God)

This should be our anthem according to most other people (I don't really get what they see there)
Saule, Pērkons, Daugava

Also
Pūt vejiņi
This was used instead of the anthem in the 80s just for heck of it :)

And this I just randomly noticed some people also want this as anthem
Mana dziesma

I love that song! I've listened to it at least 100 times. :)

Finlandia-hymni is so much prettier than Maamme. It makes me sad that it's not our national hymn instead. :doggy:

It is pretty, but I think I actually [very slightly] prefer Maamme as the national anthem.

I think the North Korean and old Soviet Union anthems kick ass. I guess if a brutal communist dictator orders you to write an anthem, you'd better write something awesome.

I also like the Thai and Australian anthems.

Except anthems aren't usually about how your PC is turned off and phone isn't ringing :? Brainstorm is good at being epic :) they also had this song they addapted for tourism promotion (I really like the Latvian original, which is about something else entirely  ): http://youtu.be/MQYXhHCToQI If you liked first one, listen to this one and then come to Latvia - we have cookies

I think it has more to do with your avarage authorian ideology - monumental, glorifying and therefore, ofcourse they go for epic, or a march that naturaly sounds epic too. BTW I don't get what people hear in the soviet anthem - it is so long winded that only granies in 1950s ought to love it

I found a better version of the provincial anthem where my roots are.
Groningen..

The song is written in dialect, but the lyrics are not correct everywhere.. There are some minor mistakes.

She has a very good articulation :)

Germany and Israel. I find both incredibly beautiful. The Hungarian one is also really nice. And Saudi Arabia.

This is not the official anthem of Ukraine, but I feel it would be an incredible anthem:

Are you kidding? The chorus alone is more epic than any other five anthems combined. It sounds impressive, even awe-inspiring, but there's also something a little sad about it when you think how the lyrics are glorifying the great Soviet Union and the march towards communism and you realize that none of that was ever going to happen and the whole idea was a lie.

My favorites are the Soviet Union anthem (it's so melancholic, whenever I play it with my harmonica it gives me the shivers) and la Marseillaise. It's really great that you don't actually need to "sing" it, you can just shout it.
I also like the South African anthem, Finlandia Hymni and the Star spangled banner.
"Tot el camp" is really nice too.

My favourite part is the one about the impure blood of your enemies watering your furrows. French truly is the language of love, n'est pas?
Finlandia Hymni
That's not the national anthem of Finland. "Maamme" is. (I know it sounds like a racist character from a Civil War-era novel, but that's its name.)

What's that? Totenkopf?

Yep, some people criticize this aspect and prefer other verses.

I know but apparently it's the name of the song, I saw Lumiel quote it that's where I discovered it.

Neither of them are national anthems though. Isn't that what this thread is about?

Well, OP only said "anthems," though all of his anthems were of the national variety. I'm sure it doesn't matter, though.

I've found most national anthems I've listened to to be pretty meh. God Save the Queen and the Star Spangled banner are usually considered 2 of the best anthems but I just find them uninteresting. The only two ones that have impressed me were USSR's and France's. USSR's anthem was just pretty badass and La Marseillaise is just so glorious, definitely the best national anthem of all time.

I can't really complain about the Portuguese anthem, the instrumentals are nice and the lyrics are cool overall. Would not be surprised if most foreigners found it to be just another generic anthem, though.
