Actually when the film ended it seemed to me it was more like a documentary on Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis than on astrophysics. But I guess they wanted to talk about his life and and so, not to be needlessly boring for the public.

But I also guess people who watched this movie were more interested in the stars and theory of relativity than in ALS

Wyrmwood (Australia, 2014). Now this was a good zombie movie. A bit reminiscent of Mad Max, actually. Really relaxed and effortless and fun. I recommend. 9/10.

Nope, wyrm is Old English.

Proto-Germanic *wurmiz > Old English wyrm /wyrm/ > Middle (and eventually Modern) English worm

I wonder whether there are any Welsh words with word-final rm.

I recently watched "Crimson Peak", and I liked it because of the "gothic esthetic". There were trying to recreate an special atmosphere and the film was entertaining enough

Rashomon (1950) by Akira Kurosawa.

First ever Kurosawa movie I've watched. I thought it was an interesting movie with 4 people telling a quite different story regarding the events they've witnessed/been a part of. Makes you wonder where the truth lies in. Also, good acting like Mifune... and why did his voice seem to sound exactly like Roronoa Zoro's from One Piece? I couldn't help but shake that feeling. Also, the line "you don't know who to trust nowadays any more", people were already saying that in the 50s haha. Or hell, back in the Edo period which is the time this movie is set in.

Karashimi no Beradonna, Japan 1973 (Belladonna of Sadness). It's an erotic animation that's apparently been restored into 4K quality and is now touring the world's movie festivals, which is where I saw it, too. Very aesthetic and beautiful artworkwise. As for the message, well, very pro-woman and critical of religious and sexual double standards. If I'd have to write it a slogan, I'd go for "The Devil -- standing by women, sexuality and birth control since Medieval France." :P Also a bit ironic how it's an erotic animation with this theme, but I guess Japan was as restrictive of depictions of female genitalia back then as it is now, so there are only ever the faintest hints of outer labial lips, but mostly just blank crotches, yet instead a ton of visual euphemisms for the vagina, and a healthy representation of penises. :ohwell:

Either way, it was a very interesting thing to watch, and I guess I'm prime audience for the social message as well, so 9/10. :)

Almost a week ago, on YouTube, I watched a short (6 minutes, 44 seconds) Portuguese movie with subtitles in English called Ana. Meh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great, either. I think maybe the tagline in the video description made me excited enough to find the actual movie underwhelming.

Then I saw another similarly short movie (also on YouTube) called Promodini in Bengali, Hindi, and English with subtitles in either Hindi or English or both (depending on which language was being spoken at any given time). That was just weird. :? Oh, but it's kind of funny because actually, the title for the video was "PROMODINI : The Affairs of Lonely House Wife [ Short Film +Eng +Hindi Subtitles]," which apparently led some horny Indian guys to assume it was a porno and promptly express their disappointment in the comments.

O Escaravelho do Diabo - from the book of the same title, part of the "Vagalume Series" (firefly), aimed for kids/teens/young adults, but also read by actual adults. It's considered the best of them, so it was naturally expected to be the first one to get a movie. And that's why I went to see it in the theaters, in (at? on?) the week of launching, me being a huge fan of the series.

The film was not that great. It was going well, but it seems that the money ended at the half and they finished the whole thing the way they could. But it had still good parts and I'm still thinking about it weeks later.

In the book, a serial killer targets redheads in Brazilian small city and Alfredo, brother of the first victim, investigates the murders with the help of policeman/commissioner/deputy/something Pimentel. In the movie they decided to make Alfredo a eleven years old. They probably think it would be more compatible with the aimed original audience. Also, it would make - theoretically - easier to adapt the plot for present days (the book is set in the sixties or seventies). No fan of the book ever agreed with that decision.

Also, they included a subplot about Pimentel having a neuro-degenerative Alzheimer-like disease. At first I thought that was supposed to alleviate the problems caused by having a eleven years old helping the police but... it made no difference for the story, no difference at all. It was strange, like the movie was an amoeba that fagocited 'Still Alice' and didn't digest yet.

But I recommend you read the book if you want to practice portuguese.

Also they changed the ending. They HAD to change the ending, don't they? Hollywood does that the whole time and Brazilian cinema dreams of being Hollywood while publicly despising American imperialism.

In the book they never find the killer and Alfredo only discovers what actually happened years later talking to a priest on another country. In the movie they had, of course, to make a showdown with the psychopath inside a burning church, with the said priest caught amid the flames and all.

My memory betrayed me, I checked the book and Alfredo learns the truth years after, talking to a German professor in France, not the priest.

Escape from tomorrow (USA 2013). It's a kind of trippy psychological horror set in Disneyland. But the horror aspect is rather mild, it's more creepy-weird.

I think it had a lot of potential -- the setting was interesting, the actors good, the style was cool. I especially liked how the family was portrayed simultaneously as likable and hateable. I think it takes skill to pull that off. However, I think the movie did trip on its own cleverness a bit. It failed to really explain what was going on in the end, and I think it would have needed to do that after building up the suspense for so long. Opting for "well, it's just a bunch of weirdness with some obscure references" is a choice, but I don't think it did this movie a favor. Or maybe I just didn't understand. But well, it was enjoyable, so 6.5/10.

"Franz and Polina", I was looking for Russian movies with subtitles. This one was about second WW, but they didn't speak so much, and I think they spoke more in German than in Russian :hmm:

I watched "Кукушкa" (The Cuckoo). There were three main characters and each of them spoke a different language, none of them understanding the others (the languages spoken were Finnish, Russian and Sami) and the story was set in WWII. As I saw the Russian version, there were no subtitles. Instead of them, the translator was telling aloud what the characters were saying, so the languages were audible at the same time, and I finished with a kind of a headache from trying to concentrate only in the Russian language :hmm:

But the film was very good, and I liked it :yep:

What We Do in the Shadows, it's a New Zealand mockumentary about a group of vampires sharing a house in Wellington, very funny and very much unlike anything else I've watched in the supernatural genre.

If I have one complaint it's that it was a bit (OK, very) male-centered, but it seems to have been a conscious choice and is taken up in the movie itself.

For anyone who likes vampires, and especially for those who are tired of the more modern friendly-neighbourhood-vampire trope, it's very much recommended :)
