The fox and the raven

Postby Quetzalcoatl » 2013-01-28, 22:51

I took this text from the forum for translations. I think it's a good sample text for conlangs :P

English:
The fox was hungry yet again. There he saw a raven upon a fir holding a piece of cheese in its beak. This I would like, he thought, and shouted at the raven: "You are so beautiful! If your singing is as beautiful as your looks, then you are the most beautiful of all birds."

Miwonša:

Here's the Selvesco translation. "There" in the English version should actually be "then".

A rather nice text. Here's the Laefêvëši translation. I wanted to translate it to my new conlang but sadly Tainyren still lack some of the grammar required for translating this text. :) But eventually ...

Image Laefêvëši:
Kǿnna kján méisáis. Aséi-i lállain kǿtyki válleda, á ƕýrre šeíllais rýððênjau. Péila zánnamah, iisóllais u kêittais válleso: "É váikkán! Állavas sĕjáiloi váisiksi sjĕkvíljan, asé váihkán illénoohant!"

(Listen to the text: Dropbox or GoogleDrive. Sorry for bad audio, and my horrible voice.) (EDIT: There are two mistakes I made. I corrected them in the text but they're still in the audio. Sorry.)

English:

Why wouldn't everyone make a recording of the text? ;)

But this is a valid excuse. ;) I hope you get a mic sooner rather than later.

Sounds good! I think I've said it before but this is the best auxlang I've seen, and it sounds way nicer than Esperanto, too.

I really like the sound of Laef. Did you incorporate a fluctuating tone?

Here it is in Vhi'ur mark II:

Řu'la řaz qhavu xavhi guxh. 'U vraz řaz łuha'vaqug-lai-zilha-savhug-zuhlufhuzu-iqh. ‹Łurag vuxvu vhi.› 'u řaz whiwa suri řaz lhuhviv łuha'vaquř „Xha guła'i! Ria xha' xixax ga'i ga'i xha' hulua, xha gisa'i ulfh!‟

Voice recording may happen but there are no promises.

Not officially, I'm terrible at tones and pitch accent (even though I study Chinese). I did try to incorporate some pitch movement, though. But I can't make it official because I'd get it wrong half the time.

I've never really seen the point in writing those silent h's. Which is why I like Italian, they got rid of them. ;)

And Selvesco sounds nice, like a language related to Spanish.

Well, they're not quite silent in Selvesco. They represent hiatus or a glottal stop that becomes phonemic after words ending in vowels. So "tu es" (you are) and "tu hes" (you have) are pronounced differently /ˈtʊ͡ɛs/ and /tʊ ˈ(ʔ)ɛs/

Ashucky wrote:And Selvesco sounds nice, like a language related to Spanish.
Yay! Thank you. :) I'll still need to work on the non-literary dialect. All the elision and long vowels are still too tough for me.

At first I thought I could try and record it but then I realised you have nasal vowels ... which means it's a no-go. :P

Here's my attempt at the non-prestige dialect, the second IPA transcription I gave. The long vowels alternate between too short and too long, and several of the diphthongs are indistinct. :ohwell:

Since this is probably the longest text in Celestial Laefëvši so far, I thought I should also write in the new writing system.
