I added the Mironese translation to both lists, and in keeping with my earlier request, here is "but you don't know why" for comparison with the first sentence.

Ma afme nesû-li po? – But why don't you know?
Ma nesû po afme. – But you don't know why.

Re: A translation into your conlangs

Postby Dormouse559 » 2012-03-19, 2:41

Here's a set of sentences I came up with while trying to work on keeping similar characters in a narrative straight. How would your conlang translate the various possibilities of meaning in "John saw Jim. Then he saw his house"? Let's assume there are four possible meanings:

1) John saw Jim. Then John saw Jim's house.
2) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.
3) John saw Jim. Then John saw his own house.
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his own house.

Would it be possible in your conlang to use only pronouns to refer to John and Jim in the second sentence of each possibility and communicate the same information? Or would it need to use the men's names? A mixture of the two? However your conlang does this, do explain it. :D

BTW feel free to replace the names "John" and "Jim" with more common names in your conlang, if you like, but assume both are male and are of the same age and social status.

____________________

In cases like this, Mironese uses a set of pronouns that basically mean the former and the latter. Depending on context, they can also be reflexive or serve to introduce new arguments. Because the language prefers pronouns where possible, the men's names aren't necessary in the second sentence.

1) Iuhanu omerià Lusyelu. Ilu, xeki omerià ttuesü xiorin.
2) Iuhanu omerià Lusyelu. Ilu, xeri omerià ttuesü xekin.
3) Iuhanu omerià Lusyelu. Ilu, xeki omerià ttuesü xekin.
4) Iuhanu omerià Lusyelu. Ilu, xeri omerià ttuesü xiorin.

Xeki is the pronoun meaning the former and its adjectival form xekî appears as xekin in accusative case, masculine gender.
Xeri is the pronoun meaning the latter and its adjectival form xiorî is xiorin in accusative case, masculine gender.

1) John saw Jim. Then John saw Jim's house.
2) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.
3) John saw Jim. Then John saw his own house.
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his own house.

1) Larđa Giremu skaliva. Dan Larđa Girema otau skaliva.
2) Larđa Giremu skaliva. Dan Girem Larđae otau skaliva.
3) Larđa Giremu skaliva. Dan Larđa mayađ/eva* otau skaliva.
4) Larđa Giremu skaliva. Dan Girem mayađ/eva* otau skaliva.

Eva is used when you're speaking generically. The use of mayađ is to stress that it was his own house and not someone else's. In any case, either work for this purpose.

If you translated it from Then he saw his own house, then it would be dan ev mayađ otau skaliva. The reason for this the ev refers to the original subject (thus it could only be used for John/Larđa) and then using eva otau could imply that it is someone else's house (namely Jim/Girem's).

Rwe Tjeñ

1) John saw Jim. Then John saw Jim's house.
2) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.
3) John saw Jim. Then John saw his own house.
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his own house.

1) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ Çon oru'u Çimiñ.
2) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ Çim oru'u Çonoñ.
3) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ Çon oru'u mi.
4) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ Çim oru'u mi.

If we say "then he saw his house" the sentences go like these:

1) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ oru'u Çimiñ.
2) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñp oru'u Çonoñ.
3) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñ oru'u mi.
4) Eđreñ Çon Çimu. Aa eđroñp oru'u mi.

The -p suffix indicates that the object of the previous verb is the subject of the marked one. It's one of Rwe Tjeñ's relational suffixes.

John saw Jim. Then John saw Jim's house.
John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.
John saw Jim. Then John saw his (own) house.
John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his (John's) house.

Dssan vrurønel Dssim. Dssan vrurønit Dssïmrhas gëttra.
Dssan vrurønel Dssim. Dssim vrurønit Dssänrhas gëttra.
Dssan vrurønel Dssim. Dssan vrurønit ludmrhas gëttra.
Dssan vrurønel Dssim. Dssim vrurønit lurhas gëttra.

In Genljøŋ, a pronoun must refer to a noun in, but not necessarily the subject of, the preceding sentence/clause, unless it is the subject, in which case it must refer to the subject. When used with the reflexive suffix -dm, however, it must refer to the subject of the clause in question, even if it is not the subject of its own clause.

Therefore, removing both names, one could also distinguish between "He saw him. Then he (must refer to the subject of the last sentence) saw his (own) house." and "He saw him. Then he (must refer to the subject of the last sentence) saw his (the other person's) house." Like so:

Vrurønel. Vrurønit ludmrhas gëttra.
vs
Vrurønel. Vrurønit lurhas gëttra.

If you were to say "He saw him. Then he (NOT referring to the subject) saw his (either way) house.", the proper noun would have to be used.

Oh, and while I'm at it:

English: I know that I don't know, but why don't you know?
Genljøŋ: Gräit qägräø, win qägrainø ränsjað?
I am a conlanger, a master scuba diver, a belly dancer, a schizotypal introvert, an author, a geek, a psychologist, a gamer, a Whovian, a pianist, a clarinetist, a sailor, a CGI artist, a singer, a Psychonaut, a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a candlestick-maker, and a magic-bean-buyer. Who are you?

2) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.

4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his [John's] house.

Translated to Laefêvëši:

1) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Jál Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmunnā vásnada.
2) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Jál Ǯîm lálesai Ǯônunnā vásnada.

4) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Jál Ǯîm lálesai dǿvvásnada. (= his)

Nothing really original here, though. Later I'll try to translate the whole thing to my other conlangs.

Hmm, it looks like the material being translated has changed. I wrote this as the fourth sentence:
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his own house.

But now it's this:
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his [John's] house.
Maybe there was a good reason for the change, but as far as I can tell, this new version is almost identical to #2.

Yeah, I noticed the change too but I didn't really pay much attention to it. :P Also, rereading your original post, I realised I can say those sentences in a way similar to yours - aka using pronouns instead of names.

1) John saw Jim. Then John saw Jim's house.
2) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw John's house.
3) John saw Jim. Then John saw his own house.
4) John saw Jim. Then Jim saw his own house.

Translated to Laefêvëši using pronouns:

1) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Sló raśíli lálesai vásnada radéffā. / Sló raśili lálesai radílunnā vásnada.
2) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Sló radíli lálesai vásnada raśéffā. / Sló radíli lálesai raśílunnā vásnada.
3) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Sló raśíli lálesai þívvásnada.
4) Ǯôn lálesai Ǯîmēi. Slo radíli lálesai þívvásnada.

A simple gloss of the pronouns:
* raśíli means the first, from ras (definite adjectival article, masc. sg.) and aśíli (first, masc. sg.); raśéffā is the genitive form (masc. sg.), declined as a relational adjective, and raśílunnā is the possessive accusative form (neut. sg.), declined as a possessive adjective
* radíli means the second, from ras and adíli (second, masc. sg.); radéffā is the genitive form (masc. sg.), declined as a relational adjective, and radílunnā is the possessive accusative form (neut. sg.), declined as a possessive adjective
* þí- is the clitic form of the reflexive possessive adjectival pronoun þíri (self's, masc. sg.)

Nothing too radically inventive
