cHr0mChIk wrote:That's exactly the problem I have. Everybody says it's pronounced as /ɾ/, while it's actually pronounced as /ɹ/.

I listened to the two videos arbnor posted, and throughout both videos it seems [ɾ] is still a common realization of <r>. Sure, the kid in the first pronounces the R section with a clear approximant, but in other sections he seems to switch between the two, especially next to other consonants. Perhaps a better analysis is to say [ɹ] word initially, and either [ɹ] or [ɾ] internally depending on personal preference.

(sidenote: I prefer not to use children's speech for linguistic study on the general public's pronunciations. The kid sounds no more than 8 or 9 and even for me the way I pronounce words have changed from 12 to 16 (which has been consistent for a few years now))

The videos do seem to favour [d͡ʑ] and [t͡ɕ], but I'm still sceptical… I have heard in many songs a clear [cç] for <q>. Not to mention that many of those instances the affricate had heavy frication to the point I mistook it for just [ç]. Whereas I never mistake [t͡ɕ] for a simple [ɕ]. :hmm:

However, I have heard that some dialects have merged ç and q, so perhaps it's really dependent on the speaker's native dialect how they pronounce the letter q?

Thank you Arbnor. Can you give me more examples of the difference between Kosovo Albanian and Standard Albanian? Where can I find information on the traditions and culture of Kosovo Albanian?

@ Kira-Akira

Culture:

For centuries Kosovo Albanian have lived within extensive families among members consisting of 70 to 100 which were ruled by a chosen patriarch.

The Kosovars constitute of the Gheg sub-group in which the basis of its social system is based on the clan or “fis”. Among this sub-group is also the sub-clan which is recognized as “vellazeri” consisting of a group of blood-related families. The clans are extremely devoted to their members and the great blood feuds that were frequent in the past century are no longer present.

Among the current modern times, the former customs and traditions are gradually vanishing due to the influence of the western world which has even reached remote areas of the country.

Religion:

Ages ago, the Kosovar Albanian ethnics were chiefly Roman Catholic by religion. The religion changed, however, in the 14th century when the Ottoman Turks conquered Kosovo and introduced the new religion of Islam which many Albanian families found appealing and, in return, embraced in large amounts. At present, only around 3% of the Kosovar population is composed of the Roman Catholics.
Even though the vast majority of Kosovar Muslims are not firmly religious or radical among their views, a great number of them practice the most common Islamic traditions, practices, and preventions such as the more common Islamic holidays and the ideal of not eating pork.

Traditional music:

RAPSODI
Rapsodi is a special traditional music genre. Rapsodi are poetry mainly about homeland, war and famous warriors. They are always accompanied with instruments such as Ciftelia or Sharkia. In a special way, they are patriotic songs which are dedicated to brave warriors.

SOFRAT
Sofrat represents a group of male artists and singers who sing together siting around the table. Their songs are mostly folklore with different social topics which are followed by generations. These songs are accompanied with many instruments. The musicians are also part of sofra.

WEDDING SONGS
They're separated on two parts. The first part are Songs for the bride before she gets married. They're usually accompanied with Def - a traditional instrument. The second part are songs for the couple. They are accompanied with lots of instruments and have interesting topics. Some of them express congratulations for the couple, characteristics of living together etc. Wedding Songs usually goes together with specific traditional dance.

LULLABIES
Lullabies are short poetic monologues, where the parents express their wishes about their children before sleep. The most usual artistic and literary figures that are used are comparison and personification.

Traditional dances:
The dances are often named by the region where they come from.
The most popular dance is Shota. It is an idyllic dance for a girl and a boy, showing their interest in each other. At first the girl is teasing the boy, then the boy shows as though he is not interested in her, but in the end the boy receives the scarf of the girl, showing her love for him and sometimes the girl receives the scarf of the boy in return

Traditional clothing:

Contemporary music:
The modern music in Kosovo has its origin in the Western countries. The main modern genres include: pop, hip hop, rock and jazz.

I heard an albanian female name (Blerina) and two albanian sentences but there are too many people and many noises. I don't understand much.

Thank you. At least some sentences were in Albanian, and all the people that were present at the moment when I made the recording were communicating to each other, so I presume they were all Albanians.

Sadly, I understand and speak Albanian but I can't write well. I make more mistakes than you.
