Yeah, the bulk of resources for Occitan are in French or Occitan. (Aranese, spoken in the far northwest corner of Catalonia, has good Catalan-language resources. See: http://corsi.aranes.org/.)

Using a monolingual dictionary is tough for beginners, but the Cantalausa is available online: http://amourdelire.free.fr/diccionari/.

The most comprehensive bilingual dictionaries are Occitan-French. There's a good list at Lexilogos (http://www.lexilogos.com/occitan_langue_dictionnaires.htm). Translating Eng > Fre > Occ is laborious and error-prone, but I don't know that there are a lot of better alternatives for the beginner.

Admittedly, the title irritated me but we have already had an Occitan thread, which you may not have seen: http://www.unilang.org/viewtopic.php?f=99&t=14178.

Thanks lingoboy. Using French resources isn't an issue for me, but it may be for other people.

@ffrench:

No, I didn't know about that thread. I looked for one (the search function here doesn't work for me--never has  ), and I asked if anyone knew if there was a thread already in the Wanderlust thread, thinking that one of the mods that post in that thread might know. Oh well. I tried.

Evil Weasel was learning Occitan? Huh. His username didn't come up when I search the members for Occitan learners. I wish he'd come back.

Since a lot in that thread is very old and the few links I tried to check out were dead, I'll keep this thread and maybe over the next few days I'll look over that thread more closely and import any not-dead links from that thread to here. Unless a mod or admin objects.

OK, I have some more resources:

panOccitan: http://www.panoccitan.org/ -- It's in French but there's grammar, a few basic lessons and other resources. Nicely put together. The sound files with the lessons are not the best quality and may be hard for someone who doesn't know French to follow along. I am going to do the exercises for the first lesson and email them to the address provided to see if you really do get corrections back!

Descriptive Grammar of the Occitan Language: http://www.orbilat.com/Languages/Occita ... index.html -- In English. Despite it being called a "descriptive"" grammar, it's pretty bare-bones and to the point, but it has quite a lot of info.

L'occitan Sans Peine (French, 1975, free .pdf file): http://www.4shared.com/office/nmN6JFvK/ ... peine.html -- you'll need to reister with the site to access the download. It's not the greatest copy, as it's it's an old ex-libris copy. This is like other older Sans Peine books--focused more of learning through phrases than through grammar. It doesn't even have a pronunciation guide!

Adieu-siatz!

Found this song titled "Triste es lo cèl" by Patric.
https://youtu.be/ApQJ9Ah6_4Y
Anybody know what dialect this one is in, as well as the complete English translation of the lyrics?
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَانِكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْعَالِمِينَ۝
"And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge." (Ar-Rum: 22)

Jika saya salah, mohon diperbaiki. If I make some mistake(s), please correct me.

It's pretty much referential Languedocian. I can take a whack at translating it for you.

Triste es lo cèl
Triste es la tèrra
Soi triste fins al fons del còr
Al torn de ieu tot es tristessa
Perqu'es tot triste coma aquò?
Soi triste fins al fons del còr
Ont va l'aucèl ont va l'abelha?
Ont va la lèbre del branar?
Ont va lo vent quand se revelha?
Mas ieu non sabi ont anar
Per tant florit qu'es lo branar
Venga lo temps, lo temps de la prima
Abril se tornarà deman
Ieu qu'ai al còr dolor novèla
Degus ai las me vòl aimar

The sky is sad
The earth is sad
I'm sad to the depths of my heart
Around me everything is sadness
Why is everything so sad like this?
I'm sad to the depths of my heart
Where does the bird go, where does the bee go?
Where does the hare from the heather field go?
Where does the wind go when it wakes?
But I don't know where to go
No matter how flowery the heather field is
Let the weather come, let spring weather come
April will come back tomorrow
I have a new pain in my heart
Alas, no-one wants to love me

I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but Audio Lingua, a French website which provides audio examples of various languages, has a category for Occitan.

A French-Occitan Wordpress site Los Pichons Mèstres has some school materials in Occitan, including the Occitan language itself (they're pretty basic though), math, geography and science.
