Provencial French??

Postby abcdefg » 2009-01-08, 9:54

Hi,

In a Blackmore's Night's song ("Mid-Winter Night" - link), the lyrics contains:

Maire, lei campagno gansaion
A questo nue, balin-balan,
Leis avé, lei fedo sounaion.
D’ounte vèn agéu sagan?
Lou gat sauto dins la paniero,
Medor gingouelo dins lei champ,
E lei gàrri dins la feniero,
Barruelon coume de bregand!

It goes with a note saying it is in Provencial French; however my search for 'Provencial French' yields no result. The text appears to me a bit like French, a bit like Spanish and sounds really nice. Could anyone please tell me in what language it is? Or better, with the translation :)

Much thanks in advance!
Tôi kể người nghe chuyện Phố-trong-sông,
chuyện những mùa Đông đi qua thời con gái.
Bóng đổ dài, bước chân người mê mải
Gió chở mùa về,
hoang hoải cả giấc mơ..

It looks similar to Occitan to me, but it resembles more French than Occitan does. I'm no expert in Occitan though, so anybody with more knowledge may assess you.

I suppose he means 'Provençal', which would mean it's Occitan.

So it is Occitan? Thanks for the information!

Oh, not necessarily, you'd better wait for someone who can speak Occitan. I am used to reading Occitan and understanding it quite well (since it's very similar with Catalan), and the text looks very French to me.

Now that I think about it, it might as well be Arpitan. It is often called Franco-Provençal and maybe that's what you meant with Provencial French, name which sounds just like a plain variety of French.

Not exactly. There are forms of Occitan which also includes the most well-known of all, Provençal.

It looks like good Occitan in a French orthography.
Catalan speakers could note that final -a's in occitan are pronounced [o] or open /O/, so written "o" in those French orthographies. (Mistralian norm etc.)
Oh... forgive my posting monolingually...
