I think there not many enough people interested in Belorusian here on the forums, and that's the reason.

But, anyway, I'd be happy to see Belorusian subforum on Unilang too :D.

So would I. I believe Belorusian does deserve a subforum. It's not only the question of language, but of the country as such. The Poles are concerned. Be it as it may, it's our close neighbour.

А ці не пара вам зрабіць запыт на стварэнне асобнага форуму? Дзіўна бачыць малавядомыя рэгіянальныя мовы з значна меншай колькасцю носьбітаў у спісе, а дзяржаўную - не.

Thank you guys for support, it really means to us.

Among regular visitors from Belarus there are only 2 of us, Skywind and myself, and I do not visit Unilang as often as I used to anymore. Skywind, what do you think, could we provide regular contributions to the Belarusian subforum should it be opened?

I think we could.I will do my best to help anyone with Belarusian and I think you too.So why not? What shall we do to open a separate Belarusian forum?
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Hey, I'm trying Belarusian now, to see if I'd like to concentrate on it and try to master it.
Russian is one of my native languages, the weaker one (the other language is Hebrew), so I decided to learn the official Belarusian since it would probably be easier and I would be able to find more people to speak with.
But I'm afraid that my Russian and my Belarusian will blend and my Russian will become worse :(
Will it happen?
Or maybe, It would improve my Russian, because I never really learned the cases in Russian, and the cases in Belarusian are akin to them.

And also, the words in Belarusian seem quite hard to pronounce in comparison to Russian.
For example, 'дождж' - how do I pronounce that?
And 'дырэ́ктары' has a lot of hard vowels... I'm wont to the soft vowels of Russian

It may, or it may not, depending on how actively you use both of the languages. From my experience, the submersion into the environment of one of your target languages helps separating them.

Easy, remember that 'дж' is a single sound, and it gets devoiced to 'ч' because of its final position, and the one that precedes it gets devoiced too because of the assimilation rule, so you end up with [дошч].

I use only Russian at home, so I guess it will be fine.

So it is like the Russian щ, isn't it?

No no, remember that ч is retroflex, so "шч" is like Polish 'szcz'.

There's an online database with recordings of Belarusian words, you can consult it for other words' pronunciations. Unfortunately "дошч" is not there. Here is another word with the same sound: "шчыры"

(this is my voice btw :))

How to pronounce дажджу́ (genitive)?
дашчу or дажджу?
I think it's the latter, but I'm not quite sure.

Yes it's the latter: дажджу. Since the consonant дж is not in the final position, there is no condition for devoicing.

Similar to Dutch, the rare phonemes /ɡ/ and /ɡʲ/ are present only in several borrowed words (ганак [ˈɡanak], гузік [ˈɡuzik], гандаль [ˈɡandalʲ]), however, other borrowed words may still have the fricative pronunciation: геаграфія [ɣʲeaˈɣrafʲija] ('geography').
Just out of curiosity: what do these words mean, and where are they borrowed from? (GT says "porch", "button", "trade", but I can't find any etymological info.)

I've looked them up in the Polish etymological dictionary:
Słownik etymologiczny języka polskiego (Brückner)

ганак (Polish: ganek) - from German 'Gang'
гандаль (Polish: handel) - from German 'Handel'
гузік (Polish: guzik) - Proto-Slavic 'guzъ' (perhaps reborrowed from East Slavic?)

A trailer for the new Hobbit movie in Belarusian:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O4LrwzSlOs

Transcript:

I've thought the Belarusian word for 'dragon' would be цмок (and that's how the revelant page is titled on both Belarusian wikipedias). So why дракон? Does it sound cooler because Russian uses this word or what?

Hi! Does anyone know the lyrics of this song? I like this music and want to know each word of this song. :yep:

Here's my translation. Voron, I hope I understood everything right?

"This is my Belarus"

Where willows grow over the river,
Where storks gurgle over the roof,
Where gardens are so fragrant,
Dew appears in fields.

Sofa embroidered with flowers,
A girl's slender waist.
Where cornflowers bloom
Like stars.

This is my Belarus, and as I'm singing,
My Belarus feels how I love her.
This is my Belarus and my beloved land,
It shines like a star from the sky,
Wherever I am.

Obelisk of perfect days,
Minsk warmly welcomes everyone.
Białowieża Forest trees
Call you with their melody,
The call of Polesian cranes
Over vast fields.
The river of loud sounds
Flows like a melody.

This is my Belarus, and as I'm singing,
My Belarus feels how I love her.
This is my Belarus and my beloved land,
It shines like a star from the sky,
Wherever I am.

I look at the sky
And see that star,
The only star
That's called BELARUS!

This is my Belarus, and as I'm singing,
My Belarus feels how I love her.
This is my Belarus and my beloved land,
It shines like a star from the sky,
Wherever I am.
