True and not.

My aunt speaks seven languages. She gets offered a lot more to translate into Armenian than to French.

Well I should define it: The EU pays the same for all languages. Outside the EU institutions one can find various offers I guess

When you say the EU, do you mean the European Union, or everyone who hires translators in the EU?

What does it sound like? Is it harsh like arabic or has Italian affected the pronounciation?

Hey, learning Maltese seems a shortcut to learn Arabic and Hebrew (for a romance speaker). Or will I waste my time?

We discussed a similar idea in this thread. In short: the best use of your time would be to start learning Arabic right away, if learning Arabic is your end goal. Learning Maltese would help, but your time would be better spent studying Arabic to begin with.

I found a book of Maltese grammar on google books today. It's downloadable for free. :)

Hello, I found myself interested in Maltese for the last couple of months now and have finally made a commitment to learning it as best as I can. I just need to get my hands on some material, preferably Learn Maltese, Why Not? by Joseph Vella as soon as I can. That free grammar from Google books would probaby be a great source, except the orthography choice bothers me (ctieb instead of ktieb for book...o.o ). But yeah, so far I'm learning off of phrase compilations, a very basic grammar, and a descriptive grammar.

I just wanted to know, seeing as this topic is quite old, are there any other people interested in Maltese still coming here?

Boink.

I've gotten interested in Maltese because of its similarity to Arabic. Does anybody know what the difference is, when it comes to pronouns, between jien and jiena? or int and inti?

Also, to be somewhat constructive, here's a link to news stories in Maltese:

I think I'd be interested in checking into maltese some more because I've always kinda liked the semitic langs but modern hebrew and msa and the other arabic dialects don't really catch my fancy as much as langs like biblical hebrew and aramaic and whatnot. Also, I don't have any interest in visiting the middle east, though I'd love to visit the Mediterranean, so malta might be a nice place and the language interests me more than the alternatives such as sicilian, corsican, greek, etc.

Jien and int are masculine, jiena and inti are feminine.

I went to Malta last year, and bought "Learn Maltese, why not?" by Joseph Vella, it seems quite interesting. Language books in Malta are indeed very cheap (I paid it 8 euros) and every bookshop has some Maltese dictionary on its shelves. Also, it's amazing to see how many Italian words this language has in it! I suggest http://tvm.com.mt/live/ to watch some Maltese TV programmes (my hotel in Malta didn't have Maltese language channels, only Italian and British ones, true story).
Corrections are welcome

I just came across this dictionary, and it seems like the best on the internet by far! It has the gender and plurals for the nouns and conjugations for verbs, and is being updated very actively.

http://mlrs.research.um.edu.mt/resources/gabra/

Also, this is probably awesome!

Thank you for the links! I've wanted to visit Malta for years and after hearing such a beautiful language I think a trip's inevitable.

One thing that interested me is that a lot of the people in the video sometimes roll their Rs, while the woman the narrator/main guy talks to at ~06.00 doesn't. Does anyone know if this is some sort of dialectical difference? If it is, and it's "acceptable" to not roll your Rs, Maltese will definitely be on my need-to-study-soon list. :P
