How close is it to Catalan?

Very close, second only to the Occitan dialects. :)

Occitan is extremely close indeed. This summer in the Dordogne, we could see some things written in Occitan. Sometimes only place names (Perigüers :D), but sometimes short texts. It almost felt like Catalan. :D I really should have bought the big Catalan<->Occitan dictionary I saw in Catalonia last year.

Oh, yeah, I'd definitely have a look at Aragonese, too.

How about Bengali ?
It's a huge language, and nobody seems to care

There should be a forum for Romansch (or Romontsh as the book I've got on this language is entitled).

Why no forum on Rhaeto-Romansch?

no teacher (no fluent/native speakers) and no interest in it....

What are the exact rules for creating a new forum in the VSL?

None I think.
Now they (the admins) will only make one if there's someone to teach it I think and interest in learning it. Quite a number of VSLs would not have been created by these rules, but now there would be too many so they restrict I guess...

I agree. Someone to teach is a must, and interest is preferable.

Is there anyway we could great a forum for other languages instead of just a thread? This is a bit difficult to navigate. I honestly think a lot of the current forums (ones with like a total of 6 threads) could be added to this new forum as well.

Well the root of the VSL forum is the forum for all other languages... Maybe I didn't understand what you meant...

While I also think we should axe the smallest VSL-forums and move the threads here, or maybe merge some of them (so the two Maoris are distinct languages, they could still share a forum, like Ancient Greek is bundled with Modern Greek), but I'm pretty sure this would turn into a bitter war.

And I'm also not sure if it's worth putting much effort into changing the VSLs here, but this could be suggested for the new version of the site...

Hey Im awfully curious about the !Kung language of the bushmen. Also, Im disappointed not to see anything here on Nilo-Saharan languages which AFAIK are tonal whereas Bantu languages are agglutinative.
