[Azeri] Short questions (qısa suallar)

Postby eskandar » 2011-12-14, 9:34

This is a thread for questions too short/simple to merit their own threads.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

In fact, I don't know it but imperative is widely used in the subordinate clause. I should make a study on this issue.

Yeah, it could be a great idea if we could discuss this topic further.

I may be mistaken, but that use of the imperative to which you are refering looks like what we call the subjunctive in Romance languages.

Would you actually use that construction to translate a sentence like "I want him to go to Baku" ?

İstəyirəm ki, Bakıya getsin?

Uhm... I'm really not sure... what I'm writting might be completely wrong. I've been wondering about it for a few days actually.

It's a very useful and interesting grammar point anyway :)

Your sentence is right, I think it could also be said as: (onun) Bakiya getmesini isteyirem. :?:

Limagne, your sentence is completely right. And it's even more likely to be said in comparison with "Bakıya getməsini istəyirəm". :)

But actually I tend to use the second variant, a matter of purism, I guess. ;)

Yes, the first one is calque from Persian, while the second one is the original Azerbaijani construction. I think both are equally used, as I have heard them in conversation and seen them written.
