[Azeri] Atalar Sözü / آتالار سوزو (Proverbs)

Postby eskandar » 2009-04-15, 20:56

Here we can share atalar sözü (proverbs) in Azeri, with translations. These translations were all done by me, so they may not be correct! You can find more (untranslated) here.

Qələm qılıncdan itidir
pen sword-from sharp-is
The pen is sharper than the sword (The pen is mightier than the sword)

Ağıllı düşmən nadan dostdan yaxşıdır
intelligent enemy ignorant friend-from good-is
A wise enemy is better than a foolish friend (Azeri version of the Persian دشمن دانا به از نادان دوست)

Yaxşı dost qardaşdan irəlidir
good friend brother-from close-is
A good friend is closer than a brother

Bülbülü qızıl qəfəsə salmışlar, "vay vətən!" demiş
nightingale-acc golden cage-to put-past-plural, "oh motherland!" said-past
They put the nightingale in a golden cage, and it cried out for its motherland (Azeri version of the Turkish bülbülü altın kafese koymuşlar, ah vatanım demiş)

Cəhənnəmə gedən özünə yoldaş axdarar

That was interesting, especially since I could make sense of things using my knowledge of Turkish. For the last one, I get (using this Azerice-Türkçe Sözlük):

Cəhənnəmə gedən özünə yoldaş axdarar
hell-dat going himself-dat companion searches
"He who is going to hell seeks a companion for himself" (= "misery loves company" sort of thing?)

Thanks, I think your translation is correct. My Azeri abilities mysteriously disappear whenever polyglot.az is down. ;)

It stands for the dative (dativo, datif) case.
