Hi, again, all. I'm trying to figure out the meaning of "சுத்தி" or "சுத்தி ஓடி" in this sentence:

காக்கா உயரப் பறந்து, குட்டி எலி சுத்தி சுத்தி ஓடி, ஆமை மெல்ல நடந்து, மான் துள்ளிக்குத்தித்து...

Any help at all would great! Thanks in advance. :)

I think that may mean something like 'around', so குட்டி எலி சுத்தி சுத்தி ஓடி = the baby(?) mouse ran (all) around? I'm pretty much guessing from Malayalam here, though.

I just realized that sentence is probably from a certain Panchatantra story about friendship.

Wouldn't குட்டி எலி = small/little mouse? Of course chinna eli would also mean small mouse. I would use eli kunchu for baby mouse. (Sorry I can't type using the Tamil keyboard right now).

Idk. At least in Malayalam, குட்டி means 'kid/child'.

A difference then between Malayalam and Tamil. Afaik, குட்டி means small/little. For ex, if I say குட்டி இறால், in Tamil that would mean 'small shrimp'. In Tamil, at least one word that's used to mean 'kid/child' is குஞ்சு. For ex, கோழி குஞ்சு means 'chick'. You can even see it here.

Hmm...well, we have a cognate for குஞ்சு in Malayalam, too. This Malayalam cognate literally means 'baby', so we also have a cognate for கோழி குஞ்சு for 'chick' (i.e. chicken baby), though it can also mean 'little', at least in names for relatives and nicknames. 'Small' in Malayalam is [kɔˈt͡ʃɯ]. I'm guessing maybe குட்டி, குஞ்சு, and [kɔˈt͡ʃɯ] are all related somehow.

What's the cognate? [kɔˈt͡ʃɯ] or something else?

Oh, for குஞ்சு? It's [ˈkʊɲɲɯ]. :)
