Wouldn't குட்டி எலி = small/little mouse? Of course chinna eli would also mean small mouse. I would use eli kunchu for baby mouse. (Sorry I can't type using the Tamil keyboard right now).

Idk. At least in Malayalam, குட்டி means 'kid/child'.

A difference then between Malayalam and Tamil. Afaik, குட்டி means small/little. For ex, if I say குட்டி இறால், in Tamil that would mean 'small shrimp'. In Tamil, at least one word that's used to mean 'kid/child' is குஞ்சு. For ex, கோழி குஞ்சு means 'chick'. You can even see it here.
vijayjohn wrote:Hmm...well, we have a cognate for குஞ்சு in Malayalam, too. This Malayalam cognate literally means 'baby', so we also have a cognate for கோழி குஞ்சு for 'chick' (i.e. chicken baby), though it can also mean 'little', at least in names for relatives and nicknames. 'Small' in Malayalam is [kɔˈt͡ʃɯ]. I'm guessing maybe குட்டி, குஞ்சு, and [kɔˈt͡ʃɯ] are all related somehow.
