One of the (very) few good links I could find for it:
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/kannada/

And for those that want more, I'd recommend An Intensive Course in Kannada by Halemane Lingadevaru (CIIL). It's usually on Amazon through other sellers.

I should point out that you need to know the script and pronunciation well for this course, much like any of CIIL's other intensive courses.

And no problem Meera! Happy to help!

Hi,
Sorry, I was busy for couple of days, so cudn't reply soon...
Well, I'm glad that you like to learn some kannada...so today we'll start our first lesson of basic words and sentences...
Here v go...
One good news for Kannada learners is that unlike Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi and other Indian languages and the nouns and adjectives in kannada language don't have genders (so do Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu), I mean it is similar to English in this aspect. If you are talking about a man you will use masculine gender and while talking about a woman you use feminine gender. For animals and things you use neutral gender.

The final 'e' should be pronounced as 'ay' in day in the following kannada words. The letter L should be pronounced by l by rolling the tongue.

Pronouns:
I - naanu
We - naavu
You - neenu(informal singular form used to address friends and those who are younger than you.)
You - neevu (formal & plural form used to show respect while addressing those who are elder than you, who are in higher position than you and while addressing strangers.)
He - avanu (informal)
She - avaLu (informal)
They - avaru (plural and formal, when you are talking about somebody who's third person, you should not use avanu which is equivalent for 'he' in english, you should use avaru (for both masc. and faminine gender.)
It - idu
That - adu
These - ivu or ivugaLu
Those - avu or avugaLu

Verb:
To learn- kaliyuvudu (kali is the root)
When it comes to verb congujation verb-ending in kannada changes depending on the person and number.
I learn - naanu kaliyuttene (colloquial - kaliteeni)
We learn - naavu kaliyutteve (colloquial - kaliteevi)
You learn (informal) - neenu kaliyutteeya (col. kaliteeya)
Your learn (formal) - neevu kaliyutteera (col. kaliteera)
Imerative - learn - kali(informal) kaliyiri (formal) (col. kaliri)
He learns - avanu kaliyuttaane (col. kalitaane)
She learns - avaLu kaliyuttaaLe (col. kalitaaLe)
They learn - avaru kaliyuttaare (col. kalitaare)
It/That (one) learns - idu/adu kaliyuttade (col. kaliyutte)
These/Those learn - ivu/avu kaliyuttave (kalitave)

So let's build some sentences on this vocabulary.
I learn kannada
naanu kannaDa kaliteeni.

They learn kannada.
avaru kannaDa kalitaare.

She learns kannada
avaLu kannaDa kalitaaLe.

Learn kannada (formal)
KannaDa kaliri

Learn kannada (informal)
kannaDa kali.

Hope this is enough to start with...see you next time.

I'm glad to see some more interest in Kannada, but I already started a Kannada thread some time ago.

viewtopic.php?f=99&t=32526

Maybe the two can be merged?

I've been taking a break from Kannada/Dravidian to let things sink in more but planned on resuming soon.

Hi,
Well, I don't have any problem in merging two kannada forums, it helps to increase the resources for kannada learners as well. I visited the link provided for the earlier kannada forum in your thread, it was good and I would like to participate actively discussing about kannada language, people, culture and other topics...

Namaste

Merged both topics for Kannada now

Just thought I'd share a couple of YouTube videos for learning Kannada. I think each of these is the first video in a series. I've been using them lately to learn a bit of it (I wanted to try a language that would be a little more of a personal challenge for me than Malayalam or Tamil :P):

I'm a little weirded out by how happy that guy seemed while walking through a cemetery.

At first, I was thinking "what? Really?" (because I haven't seen this video before). Then I think I saw what you were talking about (at the beginning? 0:15-0:25 or something?) and thought, "Oh, no wonder. He's in a foreign country."

Indian actors seem to really love being in foreign countries (yes, even in cemeteries in foreign countries - I remember seeing a song-and-dance sequence in a Malayalam movie shot in a cemetery in another foreign country that was much happier than this one :silly:). I guess I can't blame them; I've read about some of the shitty things directors make them do in India sometimes, like burying themselves in wet, muddy paddy fields that have just been plowed (which means they're as muddy and wet as they can be).

Well, we already have two Kannada songs in this thread, so why not some more while we're at it? :P

This is a yakshagana song from Siddapura in the district of Uttara Kannada in Karnataka. Yakshagana is a form of folk theater including music, dance, and dialog along with unique costumes, makeup, and stage techniques. It's performed both in Kannada and in Tulu (and possibly in some other languages, but those are the only two I specifically know of so far). This one is in Kannada and is called "Varavirochana Putranu Padya":

Actually, here's a nice introduction to yakshagana performed in Kannada, complete with subtitles! :D

Lol I think I'll just post some more Yakshagana vids. :P

This is the next part of Kamsavadhe (The Killing of Kamsa), the drama in the last video in my last post here, where Krishna kills his uncle who was trying to kill him. In this scene, he stops some of the Gopis or milkmaids from selling their wares at the palace:

And this is a full drama, Dushasanavadhe, a story from the Mahabharata about the killing of one of the most powerful of the hundred Kaurava brothers. Like the other video, it comes with English subtitles, but you have to click "CC" in order to turn them on:

Thanks for these links and videos, tnaika! :)

I'm just posting a couple more yakshagana songs lol. This is a song called "Nodire, Attha Nodire!" (nODire aththa nODire) by Sathish Shetty. I think he's a Tuluva, but I'm pretty sure this song is in Kannada. I came across this song when I was looking for yakshagana songs earlier and thought it was in Tulu for some reason:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewkrEkaXdpA
And this is another yakshagana song, this time by a woman rather than a man. I think this is in Kannada, too:

This is another yakshagana song by Sri Girish Rai that I'm pretty sure is also in Kannada:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F50m4VYHcxY
And this is "Thumbi hoythu." It's actually a church song for children, but it's sort of special to me just because my parents learned it when they were growing up in India and they taught it to us and some other kids they've met, too, just because it's kind of a fun action song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfeWFautXbc
I wish I knew the words, though. None of us really do. :P

This is a folk song called "Adavili Athare" by B. Jayashree with the lyrics in Kannada script! I can kind of understand some parts of this song especially as I'm reading the lyrics (although it's a little hard for me to read Kannada that fast :P):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhj3hQmzf3k
This is another folk(?)/traditional song of some kind called "Yaake Badidaadi Thamma" by C. Aswath:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7cCl3nXjFU
This is another yakshagana performance that I think is in Kannada with singing beginning at 2:30 (apparently, this performance is about Kalidasa! :o):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFPTkQZJr0g
And finally, this is just a movie song from a movie called Chakravarthy that apparently came out last year. It's called "Ondu Malebillu" (but sounds more like vondu malebiLLu), which, guessing from Malayalam, must mean 'a rainbow' or something. I'm not usually into 21st-century Indian songs, but I think this one sounds pretty nice:
