Balochi (بلوچی)

Postby eskandar » 2008-12-02, 9:23

Anyone here interested in Balochi? It's a NW Iranian language (related to Persian and Kurdish), spoken primarily in Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, with sizable communities also in Oman, Turkmenistan, the UAE, as well as in Sweden and other Western countries.

Here are some resources to get started:

Languages of the World: Balochi
A grammar, phrasebook, and vocabulary of Balochi (as spoken in Oman)
Learn Balochi
Baaskani Diwan (popular Baloch forum with learning resources)
EuroBaluchi portal
EuroBaluchi dictionary
Another Balochi dictionary
Learn Balochi 101

There was a Unilang member who spoke Balochi, as I recall: mohdasim87. If anyone is seriously interested, perhaps they could get in touch with him!

I'm interested in Baluchi but unfortunately, I don't currently have time for learning languages. Thanks for the links. I knew EuroBaluchi and had read some of its articles.

I'd like to learn Balochi, I heard some people speaking it in the NWFP in Pakistan earlier this year and I could pick out quite a few cognate words with Persian when I listened in. I think I read somewhere that Kurds and Balochis at one point used to live relatively close to eachother? I wonder how similarly/differently their languages have evolved since then..

I don't know much about Balochi history, but it's true that Balochi is classified as a North-West Iranian (or Iranic ;)) language, together with Persian and Kurdish, rather than some of the Balochi's geographical neighbors like the Pashtuns, whose language is South-East Iranian. This might suggest that the Balochis did indeed once live close to Kurds and Persians, or even that the three had formed a subgroup that was once homogeneous and later split off to become distinct peoples.

McGill University seems to have digitalized the 1960's textbook A Course in Balochi by Baker et al. here.

It contains both volumes. Unfortunately no audio however(if any was ever made for this textbook that is).

Not a problem.

Fun thing is, I used to own a paperback copy a few years ago until I sold it. I'm glad to see it in the public domain now. It's certainly the best textbook for Balochi I've seen.

Aw, man! That's the same crazy transcription my Punjabi textbook used!
