Postby ILuvEire » 2011-03-01, 23:50

Aloha! Wahi a kahi, a‘ole au ma ka forum ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, no lailia ua ho‘oholo i ka hele mai a ka hūhā.
Hello! I was told I'm not on the Hawaiian forum enough, so I decided to come chat.

E ha‘i iā kākou: I ke aha a‘o ‘oe i ka ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i?
Tell us: why do you learn Hawai‘ian?

A‘o au i ka ‘ōlelo no mea lua: ‘ekahi, nani ia a aloha au i ka Hawai‘i, a, ‘elua, male ka makuahine o‘u i he Hawai‘i a noho i ke Kauai.
I learn Hawaiian for two reasons: first, it's beautiful and I love Hawai‘i, and, two, my aunt is married to a Hawai‘ian and lives on Kauai.

Nani ka ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i <3

Aloha kaua! 'Ae, 'o au ho'i kekahi kai 'ole e holo mai i ka Hawaiian forum (no ka mea, busy loa au i keia mau la!) i na manawa apau.

Hi to us both! Yep I'm also one who doesn't come to the Hawaiian forum all the time (because I'm very busy these days!)

E ha‘i iā kākou: I ke aha a‘o ‘oe i ka ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i?

Ke a'o nei au i ka 'olelo Hawai'i no kona like loa i ka 'olelo Maori. Ua kakau 'ia e na kupuna Maori i loko i na nupepa Maori he mea "mama" loa no lakou e a'o i ka 'olelo Hawai'i ina hele lakou i Hawai'i noho ai.

I'm learning Hawaiian because its very similar to Maori. Maori ancestors wrote in the Maori newspapers it was very easy for them to learn to speak Hawaiian when they went to Hawaii.

A‘o au i ka ‘ōlelo no mea lua: ‘ekahi, nani ia a aloha au i ka Hawai‘i, a, ‘elua, male ka makuahine o‘u i he Hawai‘i a noho i ke Kauai.

'A'ole kekahi o ku'u 'ohana e noho ana ma Hawai'i, aka, he nui loa ko'u mau hoa aloha kei 'ike i ka 'olelo Hawai'i, a, ua kokua mai lakou ia'u e a'o i ka lakou 'olelo.

None of my family live in Hawai'i, but, I have a lot of friends who know how to speak Hawaiian and they have been helping me to learn their language.

Ke mahalo aku nei au i nā kānaka a pau o kēia hui kamaʻilio e hōʻike aku nei i kā lākou kākoʻo i ke ola mau o ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. He mau makahiki helu wale i hala aku nei, ua manaʻo akula nā kūpuna e hiki koke mai ana ka wā e pau ai ua ʻōlelo makamae nei o mākou, akā, ma muli nō o ka hana nui o nā kānaka kūpaʻa ma hope o ka ʻōlelo ʻōiwi o mākou, ke laua aʻe nei nō.

I would like to thank everyone showing their support for the longevity of the Hawaiian language in this thread. Not that long ago, the elders thought that this precious language would soon die of. However, following the hard work of very dedicated individuals, the situation is improving. The Māori people have been our role models. They've strived to revitalize their ancestral language through multiple venues, and we are trying to follow their example.
I nui ke aho a moe i ke kai, no ke kai kā hoʻi ua ʻāina.
