Meera and dEhiN's Hawaiian Thread

Postby dEhiN » 2017-03-18, 19:20

Hi all, so Meera and I have decided to learn Hawaiian. We're going to do it together to keep ourselves motivated. We've decided to start with this playlist on Youtube called Nā Kai ʻEwalu- Book 1 (Chapters 1-10). It's from a channel called LearnHawaiian, and it uses a book. I'm not sure if we'll use the book.

Anyway, this is going to be our thread while we learn.

So far the plan is to do the first two videos by March 19:
1) Hoʻolauna: An Introduction. Welcome to the Hawaiian Language!
2) Class 1 (part one): An Introduction To The Hawaiian Language

Let's do Class 1, Parts 3 and 4 by today or tomorrow. Part 3 is the same as Part 2 with an extra bit added on; it shows them singing the Hakalama. So I started Part 3 at about the 8 minute mark.

Maybe we could also record ourselves (using like Vocaroo or something) doing the Hakalama and link to it here?

I found the lessons a bit hard to follow and disjointed because she's using a book which we don't have. I remember you sent me a link to Kamehameha Schools Distance Learning site where they have video lessons teaching Hawaiian. I went through the first 10-11 minutes of the first lesson, which you can find here. I found these lessons much clearer because they don't use any outside texts. There are 24 lessons in total, each about 1 hour long. Maybe check out the first few minutes if you have time and tell me what you think.

Hi all, so for anyone else reading this, Meera and I have decided to use these lessons. Each lesson is about 1 hour, and we're going to do one lesson a day starting on Monday, March 27.

Personally that'll be a bit difficult for me because I'm not used to such a "fast" pace. But I think it'll be good for me.

Also, I learned the first four Hawaiian numbers:
one - kahi
two - lua
three - kolu
four - hā

According to Wiktionary, those are the first four cardinal numbers. But according to Omniglot the cardinals are different. I'm not sure what the differences are between them.

Make that one lesson a week; one a day is too fast a pace for both of us.

Sure; what about Spanish or Turkish? Or which languages do you want to do?

So I guess Meera and my endeavour to learn Hawaiian has died! :( Oh well, maybe some day in the future I'll come back to Hawaiian.
