Identifying language (possibly Manchu or Mongolian?)

Postby Pugie » 2016-02-16, 17:02

Hi I need help identifying what language this is. I was in contact with a person at Stockholm University (I live in Stockholm) and that person said that it could be Manchu or Mongolian script but that they didn't know more so now I'm here looking for more info!

I'm doing an art project about the person who had this document (who unfortunetly is dead so I can't ask her) and I think that maybe i'll get to know her by learning more about this text.

I would be really greatful for some further information :)

Hi. I'm no specialist, but I did run across some info on the wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchu_language
concerning Manchu. Looks like Manchu and Mongolian are similar ralted language, but there's only about 10 people in the world who may speak Manchu anymore. There's some info in the "Current Situation" section of the Manchu page that talks about another dialect called Xibe which is in active use and teaching in XinJiang, China. There's a newspaper that may be of help identifying your script as Xibe is evidentially very close to Manchu.

If it's not Manchu, but rather Mongolian, Inner Mongolia is the place to find people who could read it. Mongolia no longer uses the traditional script, but they do there evidentally.

But, I agree with your friends' analysis -- it definitely looks like either traditional Mongolian or Manchu.

Hope that helps!

as far as I know this is not any Manchu or Mongolian script, if you look further you can see that this script doesn't match with the mentioned writings, this is probably a conscript based of Manchu or Mongolian.

The language (more specifically, the writing system) appears to be Mongol; Manchu has more diacritics (off to the right of the script to distinguish consonants that are ambiguous in Mongol), and here there are practically no diacritics; also, in Manchu, words end only in vowels and 'n", and clearly there are other consonant finals here. Finally, Mongol was usually written with suffixes separate from the stem, as appears to be the case here.
