A first question: what's that "lo"? As in "lo mi bai haci tur..." . Is it a particle that should accompany the future?

-nan is the plural marker, isn't it?

Bon dia hendenan, hello everyone
i like to start by saying that just like tok pisin, i am honored to doing this forum with papiamentu. papiamentu is an interesting creole language because it consists of words mainly from portuguese and spanish, but papiamentu also has words from dutch as well and including english and french. this language is spoken in the abc islands of aruba, bonaire, and curacao, or the netherlands antilles. there is a radio station (that i will soon give links to) that broadcasts the news in papiamentu, only this one has dutch news first and the papiamentu news can't be heard for sometime until it begins. it takes almost an entire hour.

Welcome to the first papiamentu learning lesson. today we will look at pronoumciations. since papiamentu comes from portuguese and spanish, it will contain many characteristics of of these to iberian languages. (a) same as in a = apple (i) same as in ee = teeth (e) same as in e = end (o) same as in o = ocean (u) same as in u = clue there are some special vowels that i will discuss further. papiamentu, has two different forms of writing. the writing in aruba that is more similar to that of spanish ex: cas = casa, meaning "house", in bonaire and curacao it would be based on one letter for pronounciation, ex: kas = casa, meaning "house". dutch origin words would be written with the dutch letters. for ex: wak = waken, meaning "to watch" and buki = boek, meaning "book". (b) b in bite (d) d in don't (f) f in feet (g) in gone (h) in hell (t) in tom (s) in sam (r) same as in spanish (or the dd in ladder) (p) in problem (m) in moon (n) in noon (z) in zoo (w) wall (y) in yell (l) in lap papiamentu also has the throaty sound as in dutch.

i'm sorry for having everything cramed together, but i used the schools computer and i was in a rush.

i don't see a lot of people interested in papiamentu

I read occasionally.

I first learnt about papiamentu a couple of years ago. I was looking for on-line language courses of different languages and by coincidence I came across a papiamentu website.

I didn't know that this language existed before that. It's not a well-known language here and I was glad to learn something new that day. (Since internet-surfing is usually pretty useless.)

welcome to lesson 1.2

in this lesson we will cover personal pronouns, they are as follows:
singular:
mi,ami = i,me
bo,abo = you
e = he,she,it
plural:
nos = we,us
bosonan = you (all)
nan = they,them

"nan" can be used to make nouns plural, example:
pushi preto = black cat
pushi pretonan = black cats

"e" also used for "the" ex:
e maleta = the suitcase

just as in spanish and poruguese there is "un" and "um", and in english there is "a", in papiamentu you use "un" regardless of gender. ex:
un homber = a man (un hombre)
un muhe = a woman (una mujer)

vocabulary:
pushi = cat
preto = black
maleta = suitcase
homber = man
muhe = woman

*for those spanish speakers out there, you may find papiamentu very easy*

lesson 1.3 will begin sometime this or next week.

it's interesting that they add that particle, in portuguese (as well as spanish) we just use the verb "ir" + infinitive to mean the future, I suppose the "bai" comes from "vai" (he, she goes).

Cool! Finally a creole. The first time I heard about Papiamentu was on TV when there was a special about Curaçao. I think it will be a very interesting to learn.

lesson 1.3 bon bini

in this lesson we will see some verbs and their forms. in papiamentu, verbs don't have any inflections such as tense or aspect, these are indicated by preverbal marker, except for the progressive marker "-ndo".(in papiamentu verbs don't change from person to person).

ex:
mi ta bai skol (i go to school/i'm going to school)
mi ta baiendo skol (i'm going to school (now)/i go to school (regularly))
mi a bai skol (i went to school)
mi tabata bai skol (i used to go to school)
lo mi bai skol (i will go to school)
mi sa bai skol (i go to school ( regularly))

*papiamentu does not permit dropping of subject, in papiamentu you can't change the subject and the verb when asking a question*

ex: abo ta bai skol? (do you go to school?)

papiamentu has what is called "serial verbs", this means, that verbs can be put in a row without seperation by propositions.

ex:
mi ta bai bin (i'm leaving and coming back)
mi ta para bisa nan (i stop and tell them)
mi ta gusta uza spano (i like to use spanish)

vocabulary:
skol = school
spano = spanish
