Ann pale kreyòl (textbook)

Postby Jamèdodo » 2011-04-02, 15:43

Jodi a m ap koumanse etidye kreyòl ayisyen an ak liv Ann pale kreyòl la. M ap etidye pou kont mwen. Si posib, m ta vle jwenn zanmi yon ak ki m kapab etidye.

- Aujourd'hui je commence à étudier le kreyòl ayisyen avec le livre Ann pale kreyòl. J'étudie tout seul. Si possible, je voudrais trouver un ami avec qui je peux étudier.

- Today I am starting to study kreyòl ayisyen with the book Ann pale kreyòl. I am studying alone. If possible, I would like to find a friend with whom I can study.

Bonjou tout moun! Ki jan ou ale?

How can I learn kreyòl ayisyen alone? I know myself and it is very easy for me to start something but much more difficult to continue or finish. None of my friends are interested in learning this new language with me and most people aren't even aware that there is such a language to begin with. Most people assume that French is the only language spoken in Haiti, or what is worse, they think that English is spoken there!

So, what have I decided to do? The textbook that I bought Ann pale kreyòl seems to be one of the very few available textbooks for learning Haitian Creole and I am positive to write that anyone interested in learning the language will come across this textbook and perhaps use it also. If you go to the bookstore in an English speaking country, you will find book after book for learning Spanish or French. Ann pale kreyòl is famous among students of Haitian Creole.

I have decided that I will try my luck posting my homework or exercises and questions from the above textbook here on UniLang. In more than one way, it is a little ridiculous for me to do so because I mean who really cares? However, in the hopes that I might be able to find a fellow study buddy, I am willing. Actually, it is a little more than just that. By posting here, I sort of make a commitment to myself to continue the language. Studying completely all alone in my little room with no contact with the language means that I can easily stop. Perhaps it is like a diet. I have heard that you have more results when you tell everyone, the whole world around yourself that you are on a diet, rather than secretly trying to lose a little weight at a time. Also, by posting my exercises here, someone might take a stronger interest in the language or at least become aware of it. What's more, there is always that little possibility, or is it hope, that someday, someone with more knowledge than I have, might be willing to answer one of my questions.

A few more notes. I am extremely busy with my work and have little free time. Just like everyone else, I want to relax in my free time and to be realistic don't know how much I can spend on learning this new language a week. In addition, I am trying to learn a few other languages at the same time and need to concentrate my free time evenly on the different languages. With that in thought, I plan to take things easy and go at a very slow pace with Haitian Creole just enough to keep my motivation going.

If you are wondering why I have started to learn Haitian Creole, the reason is completely out of my love for learning foreign languages and trying to have a better understanding of others living in a country different from mine. At the moment, I have no friends from Haiti or any other connections to the country. Starting to learn the language is the first step.

In closing, I wish all of us UniLang users success in our study of foreign languages.

Kesyon, nòt, lide mwen pa yo

Leson En doesn't seem to posing many questions, but I would like to add a note or two here.

The difference between pitit and timoun is still a little confusing for me. It seems that pitit means child as in the sense of one's own child, son or daughter and timoun means child as opposed to adult.

Remembering the personal names used in this Leson and taking a quick look through some of the other names used later in the book (Mari, Lwi, Chal, Andre, Toma), I recognize many French sounding names which have undergone a few spelling changes. The name Sadrak is used in Leson En and I wonder about the origins of this name which is quite unfamiliar to me.

Soon I am off to tackle Leson De. I still plan to take things really slowly since I am in no hurry. Instead, it is more important that I continue without giving up. I can handle a little at a time.

Enben, kouraj!

Kesyon, nòt, lide mwen pa yo

In Nòt 2 on page 5 the following note is written: Wi yes is used with positive declarative sentences and non no with negative declarative sentences. However, in the dyalòg on page 5 I see the following line by Mari: Ban m nouvèl ou, non. How are things with you? I wonder why this isn't expressed as Ban m nouvèl ou, wi. since this appears to be a positive declarative sentence.

On page 6 the short forms of the pronouns are given. The short form for ou is listed as ou. I have seen this sometimes written as just w and wonder if I could also use w as the short form in writing of ou or perhaps this might be frowned upon as the written form. I know that in American English we often say wanna in place of want to and although I would never personally write wanna, I often do see people using it. Could we compare ou - we to want to - wanna, or is this something completely different?
