Bonjou tout moun! Ki jan ou ale?
How can I learn kreyòl ayisyen alone? I know myself and it is very easy for me to start something but much more difficult to continue or finish. None of my friends are interested in learning this new language with me and most people aren't even aware that there is such a language to begin with. Most people assume that French is the only language spoken in Haiti, or what is worse, they think that English is spoken there!
So, what have I decided to do? The textbook that I bought Ann pale kreyòl seems to be one of the very few available textbooks for learning Haitian Creole and I am positive to write that anyone interested in learning the language will come across this textbook and perhaps use it also. If you go to the bookstore in an English speaking country, you will find book after book for learning Spanish or French. Ann pale kreyòl is famous among students of Haitian Creole.
I have decided that I will try my luck posting my homework or exercises and questions from the above textbook here on UniLang. In more than one way, it is a little ridiculous for me to do so because I mean who really cares? However, in the hopes that I might be able to find a fellow study buddy, I am willing. Actually, it is a little more than just that. By posting here, I sort of make a commitment to myself to continue the language. Studying completely all alone in my little room with no contact with the language means that I can easily stop. Perhaps it is like a diet. I have heard that you have more results when you tell everyone, the whole world around yourself that you are on a diet, rather than secretly trying to lose a little weight at a time. Also, by posting my exercises here, someone might take a stronger interest in the language or at least become aware of it. What's more, there is always that little possibility, or is it hope, that someday, someone with more knowledge than I have, might be willing to answer one of my questions.
A few more notes. I am extremely busy with my work and have little free time. Just like everyone else, I want to relax in my free time and to be realistic don't know how much I can spend on learning this new language a week. In addition, I am trying to learn a few other languages at the same time and need to concentrate my free time evenly on the different languages. With that in thought, I plan to take things easy and go at a very slow pace with Haitian Creole just enough to keep my motivation going.
If you are wondering why I have started to learn Haitian Creole, the reason is completely out of my love for learning foreign languages and trying to have a better understanding of others living in a country different from mine. At the moment, I have no friends from Haiti or any other connections to the country. Starting to learn the language is the first step.
In closing, I wish all of us UniLang users success in our study of foreign languages.
