No need to worry about which language everyone's doing yet, as the contest is a few weeks out, but start thinking anyone that isn't sure. These 5 and 1/2 weeks will go by fast.

About a week (or maybe two) before the beginning of the "fiesta."

Any recommendations for a name for this?

Nahuatl I'm guessing? :P
I was thinking of using a Kaqchikel term. I don't really want to go with the Spanish.

I was thinking of Kaqchikel because that's kind of in between Mexico and South America, but hey, I'm up for suggestions. :yep:

You know, I was thinking, why just have a TAC challenge?

Maybe we should make it more interesting. Any ideas?
Personally, I was thinking of have everyone write something small by the end of their CSAILC/NAILC/EALC, like a poem, story, or song, etc.
They would compose it in whatever language they are studying, translate it in English, and dissect the grammar. And we could judge them for style, content, and grammar use.
Good, bad? Other ideas?

That sounds like a very cool idea, and certainly a welcome deviation from the usual, rather straightforward language-learning challenges one finds online. :y:

I'm reading this paper. Among it's objectives, it aims to "contribute to a better understanding of the history and internal variation of Guarani. Thus, the author writes a lot about the differences between the older versions of Tupi and Guarani, the Missionaries Guarani (that the author calls "MG") and the Modern Paraguayan Guarani (PG).

Ok guys, it's just about November, and so closes the CSAILC. I want to thank everyone that participated and expressed interest! Hopefully we can make it even better next year! :D

Please let me know if you wish to keep your thread as soon as possible. In a week (perhaps a few days more) I'll be creating an archive of the 2012 CSAILC threads.

I wonder if there's any reasonably practical way to learn Chon.

I've never heard of that language before. Time for a quick check of Wikipedia.

EDIT: OK, That's a new one. I have no idea. There should be some stuff in Spanish though.

This is ridiculous. I've only found this, which mostly just describes the distribution and evolution of the languages, and when I try to look up its sources they're not online or available for ordering.

Frickin' South America, man.

Just as a note, you might have noticed that the South American Powwow hasn't been announced yet, I'm merging the Indigenous Language Challenges into one due to participation over the past few years. There hasn't been enough to justify three separate challenges. Sorry to anyone that would want to do all three challenges, but you might have to pick one.
But fear not, the Powwow is coming in November, and will include all North and South American languages, including Eskimo-Aleut!

I was disappointed for a few seconds that there wouldn't be separate challenges, but hey, maybe the combined activity will keep everyone's spirits up.

That's my hope. By pooling the contests we might get decent activity, keep people interested, and not have high drop out rates. Here's hoping anyway.

I want to do something, but my list of "interesting American languages" is kind of funny in its length.
