NAIL Multilingual Thread

Postby księżycowy » 2011-05-14, 14:08

The idea behind this thread is I'm sure all of us learning a N.A. language would like a place to practice. So here it is!
You can pretty much write anything in your NA lang you want. Write a few random lines, ask questions, make a story, talk about physics, interact, play the 'person below me' game, whatever you want! :P
The only two things I ask is:
1. Due to the nature of this thread and the huge amount of languages involved, please put an English translation of what you posted somewhere in your post whether you use the [spoilers] or change the font size and/or color (unless of course you're talking/responding specifically to someone that knows (or is learning) the language you use).
2. Please indicate the language you are writing in somehow, be it with the name of the language or a flag or even some other means. I realize this could become a bit burdensome and redundant, but I think it's for the best in the long run.
Other then that, enjoy!

I'll kick things off with the 'person below me game.' [Well more like 'ask & answer' but still basically the same thing.]
Parsing and translating.

Yay, someone's finally posted!

Just for further explanation of the 'answer-ask game' it's basically the 'person below me game' found in other sub-forums. Such as the example in the English forum I linked to. Just with the addition with translations (unfortunately).

Anyway:

[flag]arp[/flag] Heihoowuhooxóénihíí3é3en. :?

Time to resurrect my rust Arapaho.

Translation: I don't have a dog. A long time ago I had one.

Koononiiheneihi ceese' niiniihencebkoohut?
QUEST-you-to own something one car
Translation: Do you own a car?

And you don't have to parse your sentences/questions if you don't want to. I just find that helps me a bit, not that I understand linguistic terms much myself. So I made up my own system.

Nah! Actually it's Tzotzil that I'm practicing, but only as a lark. For Cherokee all I need to work on is my memory and getting myself back into it. I've been neglecting it for so long dealing with life's little games, that I need to "remember" how to use it...

As for The Iliad, gah, when I saw Audio Forum (I think that's the name, it's different now than it was back 15 years ago) had cassettes for sale of "both" "the Iliad" and "The Odyssey" in the original Greek I drooled and did my best to save up enough money for them, but unfortunately I just never had the cash, and they were quite expensive (And that was about 15 years ago, I bet they would cost a lot more now).

(Holy Halibuts Batman! Check out this link. http://www.ancientgreekonline.com/ )
(DROOL : Here's one that looks even better, http://academic.reed.edu/humanities/110 ... .html#word search. It links to another link, but once at the right place it even has a dictionary like thing setup so you can see what each word is. Quite fascinating, and a good thing I didn't find this years ago. I would know ancient Greek by now, lol. Now I'm just too old...Ha ha...[ Wait on that, though it may help, there's something that I found to be questionable... Διός, Isn't this a Latin word? ] )

Eh, getting way, way off topic...

Another Greek/Latin buff? :P

And I was wrong again! :x Tzotzil, eh? I have a textbook on some Mayan dialect or another. I'll have to look it over some day. And I do like the pdfs for Tzotzil, if only they were still in (cheap) book form. I'm old fashioned, and like physical copies of stuff (though I will cave when presented with no other option, provided interest is high enough).
Anyway, I'm clogging up the game with my rambling.

Actually, a little accidentally, and partially because of studying about Mexican natives, lol.
One of the reasons the Catholic priests translated the Nahuatl word teotl for god was because they thought it was similar to the Greek word "teos", but the Spanish word, which is Dios, is obviously Catholic which most likely would have been Romans rather than Greek. Thusly, by piecing these together, I came to the conclusion that if "classical" Homer were to write "god" rather than Zeus in such a generic way, he would have most likely used the letter Tau for the first letter rather than Delta. As well as taking that into effect, the Acting-Mexican-Conquest Spanish would have written more closely toward the Greek spelling than any Roman spelling, so Teos (Tau-Epsilon-Omicron-Sigma) would have been a more approximate spelling than Dios (Delta-Iota-Omicron-Sigma). (At least that's what I think)

I got bloody lucky my wife bought me the Tzotzil dictionary for my birthday, I've even got a book on Mayan Hieroglyphics too, AND I WANT THE SECOND BOOK TOO...THE CODEX BOOK, DAB NABBIT...WAAAAH...LOL.
Also, the underlined word says it all. These books are expensive as hell. I see Nahuatl books are coming down in price, which there's more materials than there used to be. About one million or a few less or more Mayan speakers and materials are rare and almost impossible to find, but that's what we get for having "likes" or "interests" in the "extreme" exotics, lol.
