I... declare war on Spanish! So, what's this TAC thing anyway?

Basically a personal language blog. :P People tend to use this section for tracking their progress in the languages they're currently actively studying.

There's a thread explaining what TACs are. It was supposed to be like this, but instead, it's ended up being like this.

Just a blog? That's a bit of a disappointment for something named "total annihilation challenge". I thought the challenge was about "attacking" a foreign language, trying as hard as you can and giving it all you've got.

Well, yes, like I was trying to say, it was originally, but I guess people stopped treating it that way at some point before I joined. Maybe they found it too hard for them, idk.

You can certainly take that type of approach. It's completely up to the person as to how their TAC is run. There really isn't much modding/admining of any TAC (personal or group wise), so it's largely what you make of it.

If a group competition is what drew you to doing a TAC, that is where you would have to find people to compete against yourself, we've largely done away with that part (if we had it to begin with....).

What helps you study? Do you prefer to have others to "compete" against, to help you stay motivated? Or are you pretty good at self-motivation? If you're good with self-motivation, you could give yourself some short term or long term goals and post your progress (or lack of).

Some examples of how others on here have created goals:

1) księżycowy's TAC where he picks a resource (usually a book) and tracks his progress by how many chapters he is able to get through. If it's not a book, but some audio resource, I think he uses the number of tracks. And then he tries to set a certain amount to get through per week, reporting on whether he accomplished that amount or not.

2) Michael's TAC where he lists his current level (according to the CEFR standard) and his goal of what level he wants to reach.

Since you are doing Spanish, you will definitely get a lot of help; there are plenty of native Spanish speakers, near-native Spanish speakers, and Spanish learners on this forum.

If you want others to "compete" against, you could try posting here (in your TAC), in the Spanish subforum, or even in a general thread like the Randome language thread and ask for others who would like to do a challenge with you. You would probably have to decide yourself, though, how to structure the challenge.

Hi

Thank you for the explanations. I think I need to mention at this point that I came up with this challenge in 2007. I was curious and glad that the challenge was alive (if only in name) here as well. Although the idea was to push the envelope, the participants were always free to do what they liked. TAC started as a summer, three-month challenge but as more people began to participate it became a year-long affair. Dec 31 was a cutoff point to wrap up the logs and vote for the best, most helpful participant(s). Many new participants (probably students) kept asking to be "signed up" and eventually large, language-based groups were formed. Participants were always free to declare a personal TAC whenever they liked. However many people felt that they were "out" or that they would be too far behind if they didn't sign up early. The idea was that everyone who works hard should feel like a winner.A lot of people dropped out early but I also witnessed some very successful and helpful participations.

You're welcome! Or, in Spanish: de nada!

reineke wrote:I think I need to mention at this point that I came up with this challenge in 2007.

Was that on the (now defunct) HTLAL forum? I believe UniLang took it from the HTLAL forum. Also, I believe the descendant of HTLAL, A language learners' forum, has the TAC, although if I'm not mistaken, theirs has also become more of a PLB (personal language blog).

In regard to the participation stuff, I think there's a group of us who try to respond and be helpful with each other. The group generally consists of either those who are doing TACs themselves, and so they also read other TACs and participate, or those who are native speakers of a language someone is doing on their TAC. Based on what you wrote, I would say then maybe the only change in how TAC is done on here now, is that we don't have a "challenge" aspect where we rate who was the most helpful or who made the furthest progress.

Yes:
As some of you may know (and I recently learned) HTLAL has an annual total annihilation challenge [...]
Obviously we could all go to HTLAL and do the challenge there, but since I don't like that place anymore and many people here don't have accounts over there, I was thinking we could start our own TAC.

¿Cuál es su nivel en español? Y ¿usted se concentra en castellano o latinoamericano?

Hi

I don't think I can determine a CEFR level for the time being. Soon I will start reading and after that I will work on my productive skills. I am watching whatever I like.
