I've seen it! Great movie! I might revisit that one, along with some other favorites: Mere Mehboob, Pyaasa, Taj Mahal, Mughal-e-Azam, and the Ghalib serial.

I thought I'd do some song translations in here, starting with the Afghan song I posted above. These will be primarily practical, rather than literary, translations, just as an exercise in comprehension.

This gathering has a hundred jewels
May the sister [presumably of the bride or groom] dance til dawn :?:
Now the wishes of the mother have become fulfilled
We will pray with all our hearts to grow old together
All of us together, side by side; let life become more pleasant

You arranged this joyous party with such honor, with such respect
Great job*, family and friends
with all the fashion, dancing, and all your service
God gave you your partner, now look happy!
May your partner never be on the outs with you
We all wish you well
May this celebration and happiness be blessed for you
(*مانده نباشین has no idiomatic English equivalent. It's used for greeting or thanking someone who has been working hard, like Iranian Persian خسته نباشی, Turkish kolay gelsin, or Arabic يعطيك العافية .)

The cook is busy with the pot, the baker is busy with the cake
The florist is putting flowers for an auspicious omen on the car
The guests have stories, the maleeda [Afghan sweet] is tasty
The bride's mother has a bit of a complaint in her heart
C'mon, dear mother, may your little heart not be full of sadness
Pray for your daughter, que sera, sera
The bride's godmother is dancing, smiling and happy
The groom's best friend has arrived on the dancefloor
What uproar all of the friends are making out of happiness!
Splendid, what a pleasant time! Right on, all of you!

Mashallah, our bride has caught the light :?:
No one's seen anyone more handsome than our groom
The groom stole a kiss planted on the dear bride's face
The bride is looking a little pale from embarrassment
You're in debt from all of this :?:
May this party and these empty pockets be blessed
God willing, your debt will come to an end soon
God willing, you'll grow old together well

Be faithful to each other, so that the problems will be few
In times of happiness or sadness, be close companions to each other
Bring the candle and mirror, and the sweets and henna
Together we'll carry out the old traditions

One more Persian one for tonight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ItPZJGGhA

The lyrics are a poem by Kamal Khojandi.

I said, are you an angel or a human? They said, both
Are you a mine of salt or sugar? They said, both
I said, in subtlety are you are a flower, O caftan-wearing cypress,
or a sugarcane growing in the middle of a rock? They said, both
I said, with your faint trace of mustache and life-giving ruby lips,
are you the water of life, or Khizr? They said, both
I said, with that forehead on which one's face can be seen,
are you a mirror or a moon? They said, both
I said, with one flirtatious gesture do you rob my head of sense,
or do you carry my wits away from my body? They said, both
I said, are you are my heart and I don't know where you are,
or are you the eyes of those endowed with sight? They said, both
I said, are you just so unaware of your own perfection,
or are you totally unaware of the world? They said, both

It sounds really nice! Is that in Iranian Persian, Tajiki Persian, or Afghani Persian? Also, if you have time, could you provide the IPA transcription for the Persian, or at least a romanisation? Thanks!

The singer is Tajik and she has a Tajik accent, but the lyrics are in classical Persian which doesn't really differ across dialects. Here's a romanization:

Guftam malakī ya basharī? Guft ki har du
Kān-i namakī yā shakarī? Guft ki har du
Guftam ba latāfat gulī ay sarv-i qabāpūsh
Yā nayshakarī dar kamarī? Guft ki har du
Guftam ba khatt-i sabz o lab-i la'l-ravānbakhsh
āb-i khizrī yā khizrī? Guft ki har du
Guftam ba jabīnī ki ba ān rūy tavān dīd
yā ā'īna ī yā qamarī? Guft ki har du
Guftam ki ba yak ishva rubā'ī zi saram aql
yā hūsh-i man az tan bibarī? Guft ki har du
Guftam dil-i mā'ī ki nadānīm kujā'ī
yā dīda-yi ahl-i nazarī? Guft ki har du
Guftam zi kamālī tu chunīn bekhabar u bas
ya khud zi jahān bekhabarī? Guft ki har du

And a song in French to round out the night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFmrC_W6AXg

Me résoudre aux adieux.

Je sais bien qu'un ex amour n'a pas de chance,
Ou si peu,
Mais pour moi un explication voudrait mieux.

Sous aucun prétexte je ne veux
Devant toi surexposer mes yeux,
Derrière un kleenex je saurais mieux
Comment te dire adieu,
Comment te dire adieu.

Tu as mis a l'index nos nuits blanches,
Nos matins gris-bleu,
Mais pour moi un explication voudrait mieux.
Sous aucun prétexte je ne veux
Devant toi surexposer mes yeux,
Derrière un kleenex je saurais mieux
Comment te dire adieu,
Comment te dire adieu,
Comment te dire adieu

Under no circumstances do I want
to have unhappy reactions
you have to explain to me a bit better
how to say goodbye to you.
My flint heart quickly catches fire,
your heart of glass resists the fire,
I am really perplexed, I don't want
for it to come down to goodbye.

I know well that an ex-love has no chance,
or so little,
but for me an explanation would be better.

Under no circumstance do I want
to overexpose my eyes before you
behind a Kleenex I would know better
how to say goodbye to you.

You have blacklisted our all-nighters,
our blue-grey mornings,
but for me an explanation would be better.
Under no circumstance do I want
to overexpose my eyes before you
behind a Kleenex I would know better
how to say goodbye to you.

I find it really difficult to update this thread. I stay engaged with many of my languages every day but it just feels too banal to post "today I looked up some of the words to a song I liked" or things like that here - even when I enjoy reading others' posts of the same nature.

In the past months I finished my dissertation which involved a lot of reading in Persian and Urdu. I want to watch a bunch of Iranian films this summer and see if I can pick up some new idioms. I finally got around to watching The Salesman (فروشنده) which was a difficult film to watch, but great.

I convinced a friend to speak Arabic and French with me and had a great, long conversation code-switching between the two. Neither of us are native speakers, so our Arabic was something like 60% MSA and 40% Egyptian and Levantine, but it was really fun. I was glad I was still able to somewhat keep up a conversation in French too, but I kept having to switch into Arabic--just like I used to when I lived in a Tunisian neighborhood in Paris.

Haven't done a thing with Italian and might give up on it at this point. Apart from fruitless wanderlusting for German, Indonesian (and Lampung!), and Uzbek, I actually ended up flirting with modern Hebrew, a language I never thought I'd have an interest in. I picked up a bunch from osmosis after spending a lot of time with some Israelis, but I don't know if I'll put any more effort into it. Lastly, I ventured an attempt at a translation of a Turkish song I've been listening to a lot.

If you want to keep your TAC updated more frequently, you could try posting new vocab words you learn? That's what I do. So my process now is pretty much that I write any new words (doesn't matter where I get them from) in my language learning notebook, then add it to Anki, and then post it on here. That might seem like overkill, but I find writing/typing it 3 times over - both the word and the English equivalent - really helps solidify it and gives me a good foundation. Plus it gives me reason to keep my TAC updated, and there are times where someone is able to offer a correction or two because I wrote down the translation wrong or something. I also try to write my updates in a language I'm studying, which gives me more practice with the language and fosters conversation.

Just some ideas, based on what I do.

If you posted names of songs that you listen to in your languages, I would like it a lot.
(And perhaps I can do the same, too :))

Let's do it! I'll start with the Turkish song you helped me understand & translate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwRKVmEN3es

New vocabulary

kanat - wing
değmek - to touch; to reach
sevda - passionate love
konmak - to stay for the night, to settle or perch (upon)
uçmak - to fly, to fly away
doya doya - as much as one likes, to one's heart's content
(doymak - to eat one's fill, to be satisfied)
yanmak - to burn
yara - wound
sarmak - to wrap, to bandage [I should have guessed this, already knowing the word 'sarma']
varmak - to reach, to arrive at
köprü - bridge
geçmek - to pass, to pass over, to cross [should have guessed this one too, knowing 'geçmiş olsun']
yine - again; still
düşmek - to fall
içine - into
seçmek - to choose; to distinguish, discern

Lots of basic words here - some I vaguely remember learning before, most totally new for me. I didn't plan on working on Turkish but I can never stop listening to Turkish music and sometimes my curiosity just gets the best of me... I made flashcards for each of these in Anki, and included the line of the song it came from. Usually I try to make very minimal flashcards, but I want to see if having some lyrics to hook these words onto makes a difference in retaining the vocabulary.

Here's a Palestinian song I like. I'll try to transcribe and translate the lyrics. It seems to be in a very formalized register of Levantine Arabic - very little is divergent from MSA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcHNTsx5A-Y
In 'Ad Rifaqi - We Are All on the Path

؟؟ سنين

Listen to (the) voice, O youth, [as] it calls out
The voice of my country says, O my children
I am your mother, I am Palestine
Our cross ??? for years

God is the greatest! How beautiful is sacrifice,
God is the greatest! The death of martyrs
Listen to the voice, O youth, [as] it calls out

It's our day[?], it's our promise
To liberate you, O country of ours
One day, the revolutionaries will return
To the homeland, the land of Palestine

God is the greatest! How beautiful is sacrifice,
God is the greatest! The death of martyrs
Listen to the voice, O youth, [as] it calls out

Bear witness, O History
Bear witness, O Time
Bear witness to the oppression of... ??? ... the tyranny

??? our women and our children
From our plains and from our mountains

God is the greatest! How beautiful is sacrifice,
God is the greatest! The death of martyrs
Listen to the voice, O youth, [as] it calls out

A gazel (ghazal) from the Songs in Turkish thread:

Evvelce Hüda'yi tanımış olmasa kalbim
Vallahi güzel sen benim Allahım olurdun
Tevhidi kabul etmemiş olsaydım ta ezelden ebede
Bir kör hakikatle ben kafir olurdum

If my heart did not know God before
By God, you would be my beautiful God
If I didn't accept the oneness of God, from the beginning of time to eternity
I would be an infidel with a blind reality [meaning 'blind to the truth'?]

A couple of lines of Persian poetry by the Afghan poet Salih Muhammad Khaliq, from the Communist period:

I love the land just like my beloveds
and I love everyone who, like a worker, a peasant,
makes it beautiful and flourishing with his pockmarked hands,
and makes it verdant and fresh with the sweat of his brow

Vocab

آبله aabele pockmark
شاداب shaadaab juicy, fresh

I understand everything the same way, except one thing:
Vallahi güzel sen benim Allahım olurdun

'Güzel' is the direct address: "Oh beautiful, you'd be my God".

Unforunately I cannot hear the parts you left missing in your transcribe. Here are my guesses:

؟؟ سنين

I hear: صليبنا ؟؟؟ Can it be نادى in place of ??? I'm actually not sure it's صليبنا, I hear smth like Salni banada.

I hear يوم , too.

No guesses.

Can it be عذاب ?

I'm gonna try to translate this Urdu joke/anecdote that was making the rounds on FB. Maybe Saim or others can help me understand the Punjabi punchline?

A Punjabi woman acquired the services of a teacher to learn Urdu language and etiquette. After several months of hard work, the teacher told the woman "I have trained you, tomorrow you'll be tested. I've invited a famous, native Urdu-speaking poet for tea. Please host him tomorrow and don't forget that the honored guest is the master of extremely pleasant speech and appropriate behavior, therefore my reputation is now in your hands." The woman assured the esteemed teacher that she would display extremely pleasant behavior and appropriateness.

The next day the guest came and the esteemed teacher made the obligatory introductions. The host woman greeted him with great warmth and asked after his health. The guest inquired:
Madame! What does your respected husband do for work?

The woman answered: Sir! He has a vast estate, today he has gone to take care of some unresolved issues. He should arrive any minute now.
The guest further inquired: no flowers have shown themselves in your courtyard. [politely, indirectly inquiring about children]

The woman stated: God the Exalted has given us a very well-behaved little princess. I'll call her now to come kiss your feet.
The woman called out to her daughter: Guriya, please come here, greet your uncle.
A bit of time passed, there was no reply and no Guriya.

The woman called out again: Guriya! Please come quickly, your esteemed uncle is waiting for you!
Still there was no response.

The woman's cup of patience started to brim over: Guriya! Come outside immediately!
Still silence.

The cup came to a boil: [in Punjabi] hey Guddoo! Where the hell are you? [lit. where have you gone and died?] ??? come out and die. Your dad's servant is waiting!

Vocab
تاپک tapaak warmth, affection (M)
خیریت دریافت کرنا xairiyat daryaaft karnaa to ask after someone's health (formal)
