TAC 2017 Mikemike18 - Portuguese, Italian, Sicilian, Hawaiian, and Arabic

Postby mikemike18 » 2016-12-25, 4:20

For 2017 I will try once more to finish my TAC until the end. I have failed the first few times but I am confident I can change this year!

[flag=]pt-BR[/flag] Oi gente!

[flag=]it[/flag] Ciao amici!

Livello attuale: B2/C1
Obiettivo: C2

[flag=]scn[/flag] I decided I'll take a break and write this one in English. For those of you who do not know, I am ethnically Sicilian and learning Sicilian has always been very important to me. I have picked up a lot of words and phrases over the years by speaking to family and spending time in Sicily but I still feel as if I have tons to learn so I want to dedicate some time now to learn more of the language of my father's family. One of my main issues has been, well, resources. My family is from near Catania and every time I find a resource, it is for Sicilian from Palermo. I tried using the Sicilian I learned in these books with my famigghia and they understood essentially nothing. This is an issue when I need this language for the specific use of speaking to my family. When I was last in Catania, I found a book called "Vocabolario Catanese-Italiano" which is a large book with verb conjugations and a translation dictionary from Italian to Catanian Sicilian. I plan to use this as a resource as well as my family who I always speak to!

Current Level: Basic knowledge (A1?)
Obiettivo: Conversational Fluency (B1-2?)

(Levels are a bit harder to measure in Sicilian given the nature of the language)

[flag=]ar[/flag] I have been studying Modern Standard Arabic for a total of 1 and a half years in college (I have completed up until "Intermediate 1") and I need to improve a lot. I feel as if I know the grammar very well but my lack of vocabulary needs attention. I will resume Arabic classes in the Fall, but before then, I aim to improve my skills drastically and skip to the next level when that time arrives. The next level is "Intermediate 2," so I would skip to "Advanced 1." I also applied for the Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in the Middle East during the summer so we'll see if I get that pretty soon. If not, I'll carry on with studying anyways. I also plan on fulfilling my dream of going to Morocco this year! I know Modern Standard Arabic isn't very pervasive there but it might help right?

As far as resources go, I have an Arabic-English "Visual Dictionary" laying on my side table and I am obsessed with "Arabic with Maha" on Youtube. My main goal at the moment is to improve my vocabulary as well as listening/reading comprehension so these should be good resources for now - I'll add more later.

Current Level: A2
Objective: B1-B2

I have debated on whether or not I would include German and/or Hawaiian. Arabic itself was a little bit of a stretch as I already have a lot of time devoted to the first three. I'll decide with time on whether or not to throw one of these languages into the mix.

Re: TAC 2017 Mikemike18 - Portuguese, Italian, Sicilian and Arabic

Postby mikemike18 » 2016-12-29, 3:04

[flag=]pt-BR[/flag] Oi gente!

Dizimar - destruir parte do número de, destruir quase completamente (to decimate)

Approfittare - to take advantage of
Salutista - Health fanatic
Accecare - to blind (ovvio perché viene dalla parola "cieco")
Asinello - donkey (io sempre dico "asino" quindi non capisco la differenza? È un'asino più piccolo?
In sostanza - essentially (in effetti?)

In aggiunto, ho parlato con un camariere Italiano oggi in un ristorante italiano sotto casa. Era un po' difficile dire tutto quello che volevo esprimere (perché io ancora penso prima in portoghese...) ma ce l'ho fatta!

In questi giorni, sto cercando di focalizzare più nella lingua italiana perché tra poco dovrò usarla tutti i giorni.

[flag=]haw[/flag] I'm looking at some basic vocabulary and reviewing the grammar section of the beginning of the "Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian English Dictionary: A Complete Grammar" book. I actually initially found this book while volunteering in a library back home in Hawai'i and now I realized that there is a free PDF version online! My goal is to finish this book at some point this year!

The only complaint I have with the book is how it introduces vocabulary. It introduces every category necessary of words but tends to overwhelm you with so many at once in each chapter!

Chapter 2 mainly focuses on personal pronouns:

First Person:
Singular - au (owau)
Dual - maua (non inclusive), kaua (inclusive
Plural - makou (non inclusive), kakou (inclusive)

Second Person:
Singular - oe
Dual - olua
Plural - oukou

Third Person:

Singular - ia (oia)
Dual - laua
plural - lakou

In Chapter 3, I reviewed the present tense with the verb "hana" (to do/make/work)
It seems to have this template:

Ke (verb) nei (pronoun)

Ke hana nei au (I work)
Ke hana nei oe (you work)

By the way, in the past I did read up to about chapter 15 but I essentially skimmed and did not retain much of what I learned. This time I plan to really let everything seep in.

Please let me know if you have any advice!

[flag=]haw[/flag] So I decided to continue a little more with Hawaiian today. I decided to go over the past and future tenses, how to indicate the object with "i", and I added some more vocabulary in terms of verbs and nouns from the first few chapters. I also started a new Anki deck!

The past and future tenses are pretty simple, I'll just make a few sentences with some of the vocabulary and grammar I learned:

Ke 'ike nei au i ke kukui. (I see the lamp)
E pani 'oe i ka puka. (You will close the door)
I wehe lakou i ka pahu hau. (They opened the fridge)
E holo 'olua.(You both will run)

So essentially:

Past: I (verb) (pronoun)
Future: E (verb) (pronoun)

[flag=]it[/flag] Ho deciso di guardare più video della serie di cui ho parlato (#learnitalianshow). Ormai ho visto i primi 8 episodi! In più, ho cominciato a usare il mio quaderno preferito (che avevo comprato a Londra molto tempo fa) per scrivere tutte le parole che sto imparando in italiano.

La prima parola che ha catturato la mia attenzione era "cavarsela" che é un sinonimo di "farcela."

Dopo, ho ricercato le opzioni per fare uno stage a Roma e ho imparato che veramente esiste la parola "stage." Ho sempre detto "Internship" :para:

Altre parole notevoli:

Mollare - abbandonare qualcosa o qualcuno (to give up)
Scatto - movimento rapido e secco con cui un congegno si libera dello stato di tensione (jerk/twitch)
Corricchiare - (to jog)
Concorrente - che gareggia, compete (competitor)
Telecronaca - ripresa di un avvenimento, spec. sportivo, per mezzo di una telecamera e sua trasmissione mediane gli impianti televisivi, accompagnata al commento di un cronista (TV news report)
Scarso - riferito a persona o a lavoro, carente, scadente (mediocre)

A proposito, c'è qualcuno che sappia spiegare il significato di "tenerci" ? Il Youtuber (che fa la serie) usa questo verbo spesso e non capisco proprio quello que vuol dire.

Grazie mille :)

Unfortunately for Neapolitan and Sicilian, any resources out there are based on the respective prestige dialects of the former Kingdom of Naples and Kingdom of Two Sicilies historical areas. I am a native speaker of a typical Central-South Italo-Dalmatian ("Neapolitan") dialect, as I'm sure you know, and have also come across a couple of resources that purport to teach real Sicilian; I'm sure you know which two books I'm talking about. I intend to try to learn whatever standard of Sicilian is thrown at me, as long as it's consistent in the book, but try to learn as much as I can about the regional and provincial divisions of Sicilian dialectology as well.

* "ricordarsi di qualcosa" significa ricordarsi che qualcosa esiste, suppongo equivalga all'inglese "remember about/of something". In questo caso devi invece usare il verbo in maniera transitiva: "ricordarsi qualcosa".

- "Farcela" e "cavarsela" non sono sinonimi. "Farcela" significa "to succeed", "cavarsela" significa "to get by".

- "Tenerci" può significare diverse cose perché la particella "ci" ha svariati significati. "Tenere a qualcosa" significa "to care about something", e come probabilmente sai "a qualcosa" può essere sostituito da "ci".

"Ci" ha anche il significato di "ourselves", "each other", "one another", quindi "tenerci" può anche significare "keep/hold ourselves/each other/one another".

Sospetto però che il significato che cerchi sia il primo che ho enunciato perché è quello che si presta ad essere utilizzato maggiormente.

Conheço muita gente que fala assim, mas parando pra pensar, é uma forma de falar desprestigiada mesmo, tida como "errada" provavelmente, e fora da "norma culta". Eu, pessoalmente, costumo mais falar "um livro chamado".
2017 est l'année du (fr) et de l'(de) pour moi. Parle avec moi en eux, s'il te plait.
