This summer I'm going to wade into two new language families.

[flag=]eu[/flag] (A0 --> A2)
1. finish Assimil: Le Basque unifié (initiation) by the end of July
2. read Luzi, Fer by the end of September
3. read half of Ehuneko ehun %100 by the end of September
4. write a short self-introduction and get a native to correct it
5. note down the most important phrases from Euskera de cada día - eguneroko euskara, use the vocabulary to make other sentences

progress

1. on lesson 21
2. N/A
3. read the first article and skimmed some others
4. N/A
5. N/A

[flag=]hu[/flag] (A0 --> A2)

1. get to lesson 20 of Le Hongrois Sans Peine by the 27th of June
2. write a short self-introduction and get a native to correct it before the start of July

I assume I'll find more resources this summer when I'm in Novi Sad, so I'll add them here when I have a clearer plan.

Other goals:

[flag=]he[/flag] (solidify B1)
Translate three songs every month (July, August, September).
Write one diary entry every month (July, August, September).

hebreu --> B1+
portuguès, italià, polonès --> seguir consolidant el meu coneixement
eslovè, ucraïnès --> B1
àrab marroquí --> A2+

Basically because I go to Vojvodina once a year for at least a couple of weeks so I'm often near Hungarian-speakers; we have access to one Hungarian TV channel, there are Hungarian programs on the Vojvodinian channel (RTV 2), there are lots of Hungarian courses around for Serbian-speakers, lots of public signs are in Hungarian... I've only been in Hungary itself on my way to Novi Sad or leaving it (airport or train station), but I've only heard good things about Budapest so it'd be stupid to not visit even once. No I don't have any experience with Finnish, besides Dutch and Russian I've mostly just been interested in Central and Southern Europe.

(Here's another goal: translate this post to Hungarian by the end of July. :P )

U nedelju; engleski i katalonski internet, odnosno bilo šta

I've noticed that I've been wasting a lot of time using English and Catalan so I think I should try and make a plan to minimise that.

Monday - Friday; only Serbian, Slovene, Hungarian and Basque
Saturday; any language
Sunday; English and Catalan internet or whatever I want

If I see anything interesting on Facebook or any other link I should save the links and check them out on Sunday.

So my plan to progress in Hungarian and Hebrew this year has been very succesful. I'm happy with this progress because they're my first actually succesful forays into the wide world of languages outside of Indo-European. My Hebrew listening comprehension is much higher and my fluency (in the pure sense of speed of talking) is actual pretty good, I just need to keep trudging on with vocabulary. Unfortunately I don't think it's likely I'll go to Israel this year, because I need time to write my BA thesis and in any case I can't go there alone. I will go to Hungary for a bit though because it's neare Novi Sad.

End of semester + summer

[flag=]hu[/flag] B2 by the end of the summer. Will go to Hungary.

-Finnish "Magyar OK A2+" and "Assimil le Hongrois Sans Peine" by June.
Get through the Garfield comic I have and the small children's book A falánk kisegér.

-Then work on a book on Hungarian Grammar + the textbook "Hungar lingua 3".

[flag=]he[/flag] No real goal but keep working on vocabulary in my Memrise courses taken from native content
[flag=]ar[/flag] Pass the Arabic class I'm taking at uni
[flag=]eu[/flag] Consolidate all vocab from Basque class and then practice more in summer to round it off

Autumn + winter in Islamabad

[flag=]pa[/flag][flag=]ur[/flag] C1~ by Jan
[flag=]he[/flag][flag=]hu[/flag] Keep exposure to native media going
[flag=]ar[/flag][flag=]ar-apc[/flag] Read Arabic news and memorise Levantine music lyrics
[flag=]ms[/flag] Go through a course textbook
[flag=]ps[/flag] Get a basic understanding (A1~A2)

Pashto stuff.

Level B2 in Hungarian after having studied it for 1 year or so? You are amazing Saim. And as I could see you really gain a lot from immersion. After your summer school in Serbia I could notice in your posts that your vocabulary noticeably increased and you stopped making mistakes with noun cases.

But you were already half native in Serbian, while Hungarian is a totally different beast from a different language family. You're really good with learning. What's your method? :)

I mean I haven't done it yet, it's my end of summer goal. :P

Speaking of immersion, I'm planning to go to a Hungarian summer school. So that may make's it a bit more realistic of a goal.

And as I could see you really gain a lot from immersion. After your summer school in Serbia I could notice in your posts that your vocabulary noticeably increased and you stopped making mistakes with noun cases.

I learned Serbian much slower than I could have, though. I was in Novi Sad for 5 months before the Letnja škola in which I really did diddly squat. I kind of went in with the wrong attitude - my mum had always told me about how when I was younger my active Serbian would improve massively within a matter of weeks and then mostly disappear after a couple of months in Australia. For this reason I kind of thought the environment would somehow magically Serbianise me and that I wouldn't have to put in much effort.

In reality, when you're a bit older you have to put in more effort to be social: as a kid your extended family will talk to you about whatever no matter what you do, but as an adult or teenager you're kind of expected to put in your end of the conversation. I also didn't bother nearly as much as I could have with Serbian media and I only tried to actively memorise any words once. That's why the Serbian Summer School did me so much good -- I finally used Serbian socially with people my own age. Come to think of it it was one of the most defining experiences of my life.

But you were already half native in Serbian, while Hungarian is a totally different beast from a different language family. You're really good with learning. What's your method? :)

With Hungarian I had 6 hours of class per week last semester -- luckily my exchange program has let me do pretty much whatever I want. I took second-year Hungarian after having learned only the basics in the summer, so I had to spend lots of time catching up, but that gave me motivation to learn more than I would've otherwise.

I used to just kind of attack native media with a dictionary even when my level was really basic, but now I'm really getting into sticking words from textbooks and native content into memrise. When the vocabulary of a language is so different it's kind of necessary.

I'm not sure how much of a method I have other than studying every day and trying to make study as fun and interesting as it can be (translating songs I like, reading articles I find interesting), and trying to avoid English as much as I can. Now that I've spent more time learning languages I'm finding it easier to keep focused while going through actual textbooks but I didn't used to.

[flag=]ar[/flag]

To prepare for my Autumn-Winter Arabic plan, I might photocopy some of the Arabic textbooks available at my university's library:

Język arabski: ćwiczenia gramatyczne (Poziom początkujący)

Współczesny język arabski: teksty i ćwiczenia dla zaawansowanych

Wsółczesne społeczeństwo arabskie: teksty i ćwiczenia

I also have these two textbooks lying around in Novi Sad:

Mastering Arabic 1

Media Arabic

What I plan to work on is mostly passive vocabulary and reading. What I'll do is go through one of these textbooks at a time and stick a lot of the vocab into memrise.

To the extent I'll do Levantine Arabic, I'll mostly find as many songs with English translations available online as I can and see if I can relate the translation back to the original lyrics. I don't think I'll have the time or motivation to do much more.

I'm not going to put a specific goal based on the CEFRL labels because I'll be focusing almost entirely on one skill (reading).

Do share them here! I'd love to do the same for Syrian Arabic, and I have a Syrian colleague working next by me to ask if I get stuck on something.

For starters, here's a song about the refugee crisis in Syrian Arabic that Ahmad (my colleague) showed me:
http://lyricstranslate.com/en/سفرني-ع-أ ... agedy.html

An interesting grammar feature that I learnt from this song:
اتركني روح و رح إرجع
Let me go and I will get back
trikni ru7 u ra7 irja3

رح - ra7 - is a future tense marker. ra7 irja3 - I will return.
