TAC 2013 - Mike - Greek & Gaelic

Postby Michael » 2013-01-07, 23:09

I've participated in TAC 2011 and 2012, but I didn't do well in either one of them. I think that I will be much more successful with TAC 2013, since I'm more motivated with these 3 languages.

[flag]grc[/flag] Ἑλληνική, ἀττικὴ καὶ ὁμηρικὴ διάλεκτοι
ANCIENT GREEK, Attic and Homeric dialects
I've been drooling over Ancient Greek for the longest. I got a hold of Introduction to Attic Greek from a close friend, and this I will use to learn basic Attic Greek. Once I'm done with that course, I will use a PDF version (it's now in the public domain) of Homeric Greek: A Book for Beginners to get an idea of Homeric. I've got the Odyssey with Homeric Greek original on the left side and an English translation on the right—I would like to read the text on the left side.

EDIT 1: I retired Turkish. I haven't the time for that.
EDIT 2: I retired Polish too, and replaced it with [flag]ga[/flag] Irish (Gaeilge). I love the Goidelic Celtic languages. I added Spanish and Modern Greek, since I figured I had might as well add 'em.
EDIT 3: I've switched from Irish to [flag]gd[/flag] Scottish Gaelic, for a few reasons which I will not get in to.

I really like the languages you picked! All three of them have been on my to-do list for a while now- especially Ancient Greek.
I wish you luck!

Thanks! I hope to be of some inspiration if you ever decide to take up one—or all—of them. :)

Also, I will try my best to keep myself motivated and update this log every Sunday afternoon.

Hi Mike!

Would you advice to learn Modern Greek first, or Ancient Greek first?

If you're legitimately interested in modern Greece (like me), then go for Modern Greek first. Then, Ancient Greek will simply become a matter of learning minor variations in grammar and lexicon.

[flag]en-us[/flag] OK, give it to me tomorrow. How, when and why did your mother learn Turkish?

I've been neglecting updating this TAC log of mine, but then again, there's not much to say. I've been reconstructing my Anki Modern Greek deck lately, since the laptop I had it on was stolen back in September, and I won't be starting on my actual TAC languages until I get it all reconstructed.

I've had to retire Turkish. I must focus on Polish and Ancient Greek in 2013. I'm adding Tamil, though.

How long ago did you put Tamil off?

I put it off in December 2010.

I wanted to add Gujarati, but I had to remove Tamil. I mustn't get distracted. :(

I wanted to focus on Irish before I reviewed Modern Greek and did some Attic, but I'm actually going to be traveling to Greece for two weeks this summer, so Greek has assumed priority over Irish for me. I will focus on Spanish after I've gotten somewhere with the other three languages.

Whoa, quite a while since I've last posted anything on here! I had somewhat progressed in Irish before I made the well-thought-out switch to Scots Gaelic, but not significantly, and thus far the transition is going smoothly.
