TAC 2013 - Saim - FuS7a Arabic, Hebrew, Polish

Postby Saim » 2012-01-16, 1:40

I feel like I've been making great progress with these two languages, but at a much slower pace than I could be making it. I've been learning Urdu on-and-off for over a year now - I started just before I went to Pakistan in December 2010, then stopped afterwards because I didn't learn much and became demotivated, then started again last September. Dutch I've been learning since February, but more intensively towards the end of 2011. I've started this log because I feel like I'll be more motivated to study if I keep track of my concrete improvements. I've found that I've spent too much time reading English posts on this forum and forums like rationalskepticism.org, so hopefully this thread will help me use my messageboard addiction to my advantage.

I've been learning for the most part by translating songs, so I'll mostly be posting translations of Hindi and Dutch songs in this thread. I also occasionally chat on Skype as well, with a man from Amsterdam and a woman from Rawalpindi. I kept logs of the Urdu conversations I had for a while, but I think because they weren't public I didn't bother keeping them up.

Here are the primary sources I use to study my languages:

Dutch
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ (Dutch-English)
http://translate.google.com/#en|nl (English-Dutch)
http://www.dutchgrammar.com
Update: I think I'll start using my paper dictionary for Dutch, because it'll mean less time staring at my computer screen.
The New Routledge Dutch Dictionary (Dutch-English, English-Dutch)

Hindi-Urdu
Oxford Hindi-English dictionary (1993)(Hindustani-English)
http://www.hamariweb.com/dictionaries/Default.aspx (English-Hindustani)
http://www.ijunoon.net/urdudic (English-Hindustani)
http://www.shabdkosh.com/ (English-Hindustani)
Urdu: An essential grammar (Schmidt 1999/2004, published by Routledge)

My main goal is to be able to communicate fluidly and effectively in these languages when I visit the countries in which they are spoken. For Dutch, that'll be late February, and I'll be in Amsterdam and then the Hague for a week. For Urdu, I'm not certain, but I'll probably go to Islambad in June for a month or so. I'm also going to visit Serbia after the Netherlands, but I can already get by in Serbian so it's not my primary focus. A perhaps overly-optimistic goal for Urdu is that I'll feel comfortable enough with the language to start learning Punjabi alongside it before I get to Pakistan, but we'll see how that goes.

Hi Saim, I'm not a native speaker so don't take this a hundred percent but in Hindi if a verb has kar at the end (or ke in colloquial form) gives the sense of "after doing, having gone" it's used in English we would say,"She opened the door and came in the room." In Hindi we would say, "After opening the door, she came in." So I think the sentance is "After/Having played the horn". Baja could mena a lot of differnt things, but I don't know what I would use in English in to say pl;ayed the horn? I hope it makes a little more sense now.

Accha, that makes sense now. I've checked Wikipedia's Hindi-Urdu grammar page, and it says more or less the same thing as you (just with examples and some more detail):

* In sentences in which a conjunctive participle is used to refer to the first act in a series of two, if the first act is in some sense a 'cause' for the second act, Hindi prefers the conjunctive suffix -kar be dropped and only the root of the first verb used. In Urdu, on the other hand, the use of conjunctive suffix is always required.

Language Transliterated sentence Translated meaning (in English)
Hindi un-ko dekh ham ro paRey On seeing him we burst into tears.
Urdu un-ko dekh-kar ham ro paRey On seeing him we burst into tears.
The following sentence, however, will be same in both Hindi and Urdu:
Hindi/Urdu un-sey jaa-kar miliye Please go and meet him.

Thus thus the "ke" in bajake is there to connect it to the next verb, "aa". So "bajake" is indeed an imperative, but its imperative status is derived from the conjugation of "aanaa", not from its own conjugation.

Incidentally, new vocab:

ro parna = to burst into tears

Also, in English the most idiomatic way of saying "horn bajana" would probably be "to honk a/the horn". "Vo horn bajaya" --> "he honked the/his horn".

En ik ben nu dol op internetbankieren
I'm now mad at internet bankers

Internetbankieren, is mijn beste vriend
Internet bankers, is my best friend
Ooh internetbankieren

Zo volwasssen, zo beleefd
So grown up, so polite
Vroeger was het, altijd feest
It used to always be partying
Maar die tijd, is nu geweest
But that time has now been [i.e., is now over]
Zo volwassen, zo beleefd

I look in the mirror at the lines on my face
Through the endless partying, but those times are over
Nuchter zijn miste ik eigenlijk het meest
Sober were missed? I'm actually the most

Alleen kijken
Met korte rokken, korte, korte rokken
Kijken naar de meisjes met korte rokken
Met korte rokken, korte, korte rokken

Zo volwasssen, zo beleefd
Vroeger was het, altijd feest
Maar die tijd, is nu geweest
Zo volwassen, zo beleefd

Zo zo volwassen, zo beleefd
Vroeger was het, altijd feest
Maar die tijd, is nu geweest
Zo volwassen, zo beleefd

Partytime is voorbij
Nu is het tijd om te leven

Ik wou alleen maar nemen
Nu is het tijd om te geven
Partytime is voorbij
Nu is het tijd om te leven

ABN - Algemeen Beskaafd Nederlanz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKZAEW7J ... re=related

ABN!!!

PITA an Def P.

Why all the rap songs? I hate rap songs. :P I don't know if you want corrections in this thread (just say so if you don't) but I read through your word lists:

Saim wrote:gevoelen = feeling
The singular is 'gevoel'. Don't ask me why, I don't have a clue. :para:
Saim wrote:bekvechten = to argue, bicker (cognate with English "kvetch" I imagine, which comes from Yiddish)
Actually it's a compound of 'bek' (mouth of an animal) and 'vechten' (to fight) - i.e. fighting with your mouth. Or maybe that's just folk etymology, I don't know. It's stressed on the first syllable anyway, that makes compound more likely.
Saim wrote:uitstellen = to delay
A more accurate translation would be 'to postpone', to delay is 'vertragen' (from 'traag' = slow). But they kind of overlap, I guess.
Saim wrote:op de trap gaan - to go up the stairs
af de trap gaan - to go down the stairs
Prepositions like 'op', 'in', 'uit', 'over' often become postpositions when there's a direction involved, and 'af' always follows the noun.
Ik liep in het bos - I was walking in the forest
Ik liep het bos in - I walked into the forest
Hij liep op de trap - He was walking on the stairs
Hij liep de trap op - He walked up the stairs
Hij ging de kamer uit - He left the room (using 'uit' as a preposition here sounds weird)
Do you get the idea? It doesn't always happen when there is a direction, and not all prepositions do it, sometimes the difference is a lot more subtle than this and being a native speaker I can't really explain it of course  ..but you should at least know it exists. :)

Nederland was koel en kil
The Netherlands was cold and chilly
En dan vooral het weer
Most of all, the weather was
De wind, die lag nooit'stil
The wind, that never lay still
M'n liefdesleven des te meer
My love life even more so

Wat ik in jouw ogen las
What I weld? in your eyes
Ontstak bij mij het vuur
Kindles fire at? me
Ze wordt nogal eens onderschat
She gets just like, once underestimated
De kracht van de natuur
The power of nature

Hemel en aarde bewegen
Heaven and earth move
Als jij voor me staat
If you stand for me
Het is voor mij bewezen
It is proven to me
Dat het lot bestaat
That fate exists

Hemel en aarde gaan open
Heaven and earth open
Als jij mij aanraakt
If you touch me
Ik wilde nooit geloven
I never wanted to believe
Maar er is meer
But there is more
Tussen hemel en aarde
Between heaven and earth

Zwarte luchten breken open
Black skies break open
Aan de horizon
On the horizon
Nu zal ik me warmen
Now I'll get warm
Aan de stralen van de zon
From the sun's rays
(Stralen van de zon)

Ik heb de liefde geprobeerd
I've tried love
Nooit was het wat het leek
It was never what it seemed like
Maar ik zag de toekomst
But I saw the future
Toen ik in jouw ogen keek
When I looked in your eyes

What I read (past tense) in your eyes
Kindled a fire in me
She (= the power of nature so probably 'it' in English) often gets underestimated
The power of nature

lassen - laste - gelast = to weld
lezen - las - gelezen = to read
 (you are now allowed to curse the existence of irregular verbs)

The rest is good, except the sentences with 'if' sound better to me with 'when' in English, but I'm not a native.. Dutch doesn't really make that distinction, well it's possible if you really want to, but 'als' can mean either. Oh and, 'als jij voor me staat' - they mean literally standing in front of you, shouldn't that be 'before me' in English?

Thanks Muisje. And sorry for the late response

Dutch - 25/02/2012
My Dutch has been going great in the past few days. I had real gesprekken with my Dutch friend, and I could express most of what I wanted to say without much hesitation. I would even be so bold to say that my Dutch is now conversational, which is just in time because I'm now visiting the Netherlands.

I'm in Amsterdam, and I'm loving the opportunity to hear Dutch so often. When I first landed in Schiphol, I bought some bonbonbloc chocolade and was really excited that I conducted the transaction in Dutch, even though all it amount to was:

Ik: Goedemorgen.
Vrouw: Goedemorgen. [blah blah] euro alstublieft.
...
Okè, [outlines change]
Ik: Dank u.
Vrouw: "Doedoe" (??)
Ik: Doei.

I really like being able to understand the chatter around me, as I've never been in a foreign language environment where I could actually understand the language before. The funniest conversation I overheard was:

Well, it was funny for me at the time.

I've heard lots of horror stories about everyone in the Netherlands speaking English so you'll never get to practice, but it's not really true. I've only had people talk to me in English when 1) I hadn't spoken yet or 2) I said something in English. For example, I made the following mistake in the bookstore:

Ik: Hebben jullie een kaart van Barcelona?
[woman scrunches face in thought]
Ik: a map...
Vrouw: [Engels Engels Engels]

I misintepreted her facial expression to mean she didn't understand what I meant, when in reality she was thinking of whether they have a map of Barcelona or not (they did, incidentally).

People also talked to me in English when they heard my dad speak (he doesn't even know how to say hallo, dank u and alstublieft).
