TAC 2012 (TAC v2.0: Group edition)

Postby ''' » 2011-11-13, 14:24

if you're new to the whole thing see: introduction to TAC

Reaching out here to the whole UL community, not just the ever stronger (and smaller) TAC community. As some of you are aware, TAC 2010 and 2011 (along with the associated WAC and SAC) were not complete failures, but as expect did result in massive drop out rates. The general level of motivation on there is low. It has therefore been suggested that we organise ourselves into groups. (and possibly do fewer languages)

Each group would aim to have as many people as possible doing the same (or related) language. Theoretically, they would pool their resources (as much as possible) and work as a team, sharing the workload, and giving each member vital jobs so that they know they MUST get their next load done.

We're also looking for people willing to take on the role of teacher, either native speakers or advanced students.

the "competition" aspect (and I appologise for completely shirking those duties, mah bad y'all) would be handled not in terms of individuals but in terms of teams. so you'd work hard to make sure everyone in your team gets to their end goal.

Obviously, there are complications when it comes to people interested in langs with few other learners, so what I'd like here, is to get a feel for who would be interested in doing which languages. that way we could organise ourselves into groups where enough people who can commit want to do the same language. By 2012, I can set up a poll and we can see who'd do what.

We're also open to suggestions:
- try having a roster whereby each person has to summarise and hold a "lesson" on a chapter in the book, or a grammatical feature.
- try sharing anki decks and spread out the load by assignign certain areas of words to each member.

I don't know if I'll have time for TAC with all my schoolwork, but I may do SAC.
I'm thinking of doing Portuguese and Scottish Gaelic.

none. viewtopic.php?f=119&t=29379

pick one or more language, study them for a year (or season in the cases of WAC and SAC) and keep a log (or blog if you prefer)
We also heavily recommend using the skype groups we have going, those are great.

Well, how will teams work? My Skype is horribly tempermental, so I can't really use it.

Wouldn't it be nice to also appoint a teacher or teachers for the group? Just to have some names the learners could mail with their questions.

I'd like to participate for Russian and Swedish, if I still like those languages in 2012, haha, I guess I will. And if there are more who want to learn Luxembourgish I would also like to join that group.

I have no idea what my life-schedule will look like in 2012, but I'd be keen to be a casual member of any group taking up Estonian or Swedish :)

I'll toss my hat in for 1.5 of the following: German, Serbian, Chinese... 1.5 = I'll do one in a group, but I will continue my (off and on) Ainu on the side ;). Now that I don't work 70 hours between 2 jobs, I think I can spare 30 mins a day. Plus, I am living in a cultural black hole, and this will help me forget it.

I am brand new here, but I want to try and understand the paragraph above. Massive dropout rates to me imply that people couldn't live up to the level of commitment required, however the 2012 reboot, if I am reading it right, seems to require an even higher level of commitment. Again I am brand new here so I don't know the history behind this, so I am probably misinterpreting this.

Also what does it mean to "drop out" exactly? If someone dropped out after 6 months, maybe this was still a good motivation to learn as much as they could for those 6 months, I am thinking.

How important is, or should be, the competition aspect? I would be happy just to make some personal goals and meet them.

The competition aspect is a formality, it's meant to help motivate people. Which is the problem we faced in the past, the drop out rates were high because people weren't motivated. Yes sometimes life changes and you suddenly can't keep up the level you previously had, but in many cases I think it was that people couldn't push themeslves. The group idea is designed to make sure that you can find motivation in that there are people around who are doing the same thing you are and whom you can talk to about it, and also if that isn't enough, you're part of a group who can contact you and push you if they see you slacking off.

I think I'm in for Hindi/Urdu.[flag]hi[/flag][flag]ur[/flag]
I am a beginner, I'm at lesson five of Elementary Hindi textbook and workbook. Although I have made other attempts, this is my most serious.
