Cyrillic Alphabet Game

Postby TheStrayCat » 2012-05-28, 21:49

Since many Cyrillic-based orthographies have no established romanisation systems, it makes using them in the "main" alphabet game harder. Following the recent tendency, I'm starting a special thread for languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet (no matter alone or with another official script), or have used it historically. Please, do not use languages where the script never had any official status.

I do understand that the alphabet itself is an issue because it's different for many languages. For the beginning, I can propose a collation scheme:
А - Б - В - Г(Ґ, Ѓ) - Д (Ђ, Џ) - Е (Ѐ, Ё, Є, Э) - Ж - З (Ѕ) - И (Ѝ, І, Ї, Ы) - Й (Ј) - К (Ќ) - Л (Љ) - М - Н (Њ) - О - П - Р - С - Т - У (Ў) - Ф - Х - Ц - Ч (Ћ) - Ш - Щ - Ю - Я

The choice between one of the letters in brackets and the first one is free. You can use other derived letters as well, for example, Udmurt ӝужан (random word from Wikipedia, don't know what it means) can be placed after Russian ёжик or Ukrainian єнот, with Macedonian ѕвезда being the next. This is a sketch, your proposals of reasonable amendments to the scheme are welcome.

I shall begin.

I thought this game already existed, but apparently it was just the Cyrillic Shiritori game.

I don't agree with your scheme, though. Ћ and Ќ go after T. Ѓ goes after Д. Џ goes after Ч.

They do in their native alphabets, but the problem here would be either sorting the letters considering as many alphabets with additional or even unique letters, which is hardly doable, or simplifying the scheme. I came with the variant where almost all possible word-initial letters can be used and can replace their derivative (Ў - У, Ґ - Г...) to avoid situations when a player is forced to choose a rare letter found in one or very few languages (Џ, Ї, Ў etc.; Ы isn't so common in the first place). Otherwise it would be hard to take into account all existing alphabets from Macedonian to Udmurt and Abkhaz. If this way doesn't work with some special symbols, to me the phonetical principle is predominant, although it's not universal and to a large extent approximate. But I don't insist on exactly this way.
