Identify the langauge

Postby Brynjolfr » 2010-07-02, 19:04

I've taken a Wikipedia article about Wikipedia (as it's available in alot of diffrent langauges) and put it below. I want you to identify what language it is.
If you guess correctly, go to this page, change the langauge of the article and copy/paste the first segment of it. If it's a short article you may copy/paste the whole thing.

"Ƿicipǣdia is unċēapre ȝeƿitfullnesse ƿīsdōmbōc on fela ȝeþēodum, þe ǣȝhwā mæȝ ādihtan. Āfēdaþ þūsendu brȳcera him ætgædere mid þǣre ƿici hȳrlingum, and ƿreþaþ þæt unfeohsēċende Wikimedia Foundation hit. Mid þǣm ȝecyndum ȝeƿrita þe sind ȝeƿunelīce gefunden on ƿīsdōmbōcum, hēo hæfþ ƿīsdōm þe man cann ȝeƿunelīċe findan in ȝēarbōcum, gasetīrum, and maȝasīnum; and hēo āscrifþ nīƿe tīdinge."

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may exclude parts of the text which might spoil what language it is.

Actually no, it's not Neapolitan, so you don't get to make a new one. :P

Sardinian or Tarantino....
Нэапаліта́нская мо́ва (па-нэапалітанску
looks like Ukrainian..but Ukrainian doesn't have а́ and о́, so I'll say Byelorussian.

It wasn't Sardinian, in Sardinian the articles begin with an s-, here they begin with an l.

The last text is in some Turkic language, hard to say without cheating but I'd say Tatar (by chance)...

It might be Azeri, or romanized Uyghur.

And it's Belarusian. Byelorussian is obsolete.

It was Tatar, but I think that you guessed Turkish was close enough.
Why is it obsolete? Unless it changed within 5 years. It's even pronounced Byeloruskee in Russian (White Russian)

I know what it means in Russian. The thing with that is, Belarus is an independent country with its own language and has been since the 1990s. It looks really dated to me, like "Peking."

I'm not up to date on all the language name changes. I was even teaching Inuktitut as Eskimo up until last year. Among my colleagues, if I said Byelorussian instead of Belarussian, no one would bat an eye. Belarussian just sounds wrong to me.

Okay. Eskimo and Byelorussian sound like they belong in the years 1950 and 1985, respectively.
