The Broken Translations Game 3

Postby kibo » 2006-04-12, 22:54

I'll just copy Junesun's intro text:

The third round of the Broken Translations Game has started.

If you'd like to participate, please post which languages you can translate from / to here, even if you posted them in the other thread already.

For newcomers: the idea is the following: an English text is sent to the first translator, who will translate it to language A. Then the translated text in language A is sent to the second translator, who will translate it to language B. The third translator will receive the text in language B and translate it to language C, and so on. Finally the text is translated back to English. Of course neither the second nor the third translator will have access to the original English text, nor to any previous translations except the one they work on. So hopefully the meaning of the text will have turned into something very interesting by the end of the chain.
The more people participate and the more exotic languages, the better of course. See the previous Broken Translations games for examples of how this could work out.

I will act as the moderator and send out the texts.

Please sign up now!

In order to make a chain, we will need at least two people who can speak each language, because it wouldn't do to e. g. have somebody translate a text to Volapuk and then there is nobody who understands Volapuk well enough to translate it to some other language. At the same time, every translators has to speak the language well enough and be available enough to be able to complete the translation within 2 days' time, so as not to slow down the chain. The text will not be very long or difficult (see previous game for an example), but don't try to translate it to a language you don't really speak. So I'm asking to consider carefully which languages you can understand well enough to translate from and which languages you speak well enough to translate to. The more languages, the better, but not if you'll need to spend 5 days in a library with grammars and dictionaries in order to do the translation

ADDITIONAL RULES:
1) The chain and the progress of the game will be posted in the first post of the thread (this one)
2) You can send the copy of the text to the next person if you want, but be sure to send a copy to me too. Remember, it's safer with a moderator. ;)

Consider carefully please, then post your languages here to sign up.

Game started on 16/04/2006 14:30 GMT

Olé! :D

Then I'll just copy-paste my languages. :P

Dminor wrote:I could do DU EN GER FR LA IT AG.

Or more comprehensible maybe: any pair of Dutch, English, German, French, Latin, Italian or ancient Greek. :)

I'll also copypaste:

into Italian and English (hmm and maybe French)

from Italian, English, French, Russian, Spanish and German

As I already told Bugi, I need not to be too far in the chain because I won't have time for it in a couple of weeks' time, so I need to have my turn before.

And I'd appreciate not having to do Russian to Italian for the 3rd time ;) although of course I won't refuse it if it needs to be so.

Let me see… Given the level of the former two texts, I can probably do the following:

CA > EN
CA > PT
DE > EN
DE > PT
EN > PT
ES > EN
ES > PT
FR > EN
FR > PT
GL > EN
GL > PT
IT > EN
IT > PT
JA > EN
JA > PT
PT > EN

If there's a sudden need of more options, I may include the following too, though:

PT > ES
PT > FR
PT > IT
ZH > EN
ZH > PT

Any options other than those would be extremely tentative for me. :P

I'm not sure I grasp the concept of listing which languages you can translate....

:roll: so that whoever is organising the game - Bugi in this case - knows what you can do?

Yeah, let's give Darky Swedish into Japanese... :roll:

Just make a list of languages you can translate into and from, and a list of languages you can only translate from.

Bugi is about the combinations. :wink:

I could offer:
DE/FR/ES/LU/NL <-> DE/ES/FR/LU/NL

And I'm also ready to do:
CA/EO/IT/PT/RO -> DE/ES/FR/LU/NL
any High German(ic) dialect -> DE/ES/FR/LU/NL

Relying heavily on dictionaries, I could also try:
DA/NO/SV/ZH -> DE/ES/FR/LU/NL

Copying and pasting, too:

I should be able to do any combination of German, English, French, Norwegian or Spanish, if I don't fit in otherwise, also from Dutch or Catalan.
Please correct my mistakes!
