The Broken Translations Game 2

Postby Junesun » 2006-03-10, 21:53

Since the first Broken Translations game was a huge success, let's have another right away.

If you'd like to participate, please post which languages you can translate from / to here, even if you posted them in the other thread already.

For newcomers: the idea is the following: an English text is sent to the first translator, who will translate it to language A. Then the translated text in language A is sent to the second translator, who will translate it to language B. The third translator will receive the text in language B and translate it to language C, and so on. Finally the text is translated back to English. Of course neither the second nor the third translator will have access to the original English text, nor to any previous translations except the one they work on. So hopefully the meaning of the text will have turned into something very interesting by the end of the chain.
The more people participate and the more exotic languages, the better of course. See the first Broken Translations game for an example of how this could work out.

I will act as the moderator and send out the texts.

Please sign up now!

In order to make a chain, we will need at least two people who can speak each language, because it wouldn't do to e. g. have somebody translate a text to Volapuk and then there is nobody who understands Volapuk well enough to translate it to some other language. At the same time, every translators has to speak the language well enough and be available enough to be able to complete the translation within 2 days' time, so as not to slow down the chain. The text will not be very long or difficult (see previous game for an example), but don't try to translate it to a language you don't really speak. So I'm asking to consider carefully which languages you can understand well enough to translate from and which languages you speak well enough to translate to. The more languages, the better, but not if you'll need to spend 5 days in a library with grammars and dictionaries in order to do the translation ;-)

Consider carefully please, then post your languages here to sign up.

The chain (35 people, 23 different languages):
English -> Hebrew (MiOB) -> Polish (Kuba) -> Slovak (Zajacik) -> Ukrainian (gigant26) -> English (zhiguli) -> Klingon (vortarulo) -> German (Adina) -> French (choriste) -> Dutch (dor&da) -> Italian (Kubi) -> Portuguese (Luís) -> French (Hefestos) -> English (lu:ka) -> German (Vogelvrij) -> Esperanto (Hubi) -> Chinese (Shibo77) -> Swedish (Jonne) -> English (Hunef) -> Catalan (Strigo) -> Quebecois (Passe-Cale) -> Icelandic (Egein) -> Latin (Ioannes) -> Dutch (Cada) -> French (Pips) -> English (Nounoursette) -> Dutch (Saaropean) -> German (Sido) -> Spanish (Car) -> English (Stan) -> Frisian (Ron de Leeuw) -> Ancient Greek (Dminor) -> Finnish (Vinaok) -> Russian (Liisi) -> Italian (Darky) -> English (Bugi)
The translation is COMPLETE!
See my latest post for the revelation!

Following languages for me:

English ---> Swedish
Swedish ---> English
Norwegian ---> Swedish
Norwegian ---> English
Danish ---> Swedish
Danish ---> English

(I am not confident enough in German, Faroese or Icelandic to include them. Or rather, I would need to go to the library and borrow dictionaries etc..)

English --> Spanish
Spanish --> English

it depends on the text, if it's a long text like the one we translated, I'll most likely be doing Spanish. Otherwise, if it's a sentence or two, I could do:

Swahili
Esperanto
Portuguese

Wie wird das chemische Element Brom gewonnen?
Man nimmt eine Hand voll Brombeeren und lässt sie zur Erde fallen. Die Beeren verbinden sich mit Erde zu Erdbeeren und Brom wird frei.

Here's a chain that could work at the moment and that includes everybody who posted:

English -> Norwegian (by Ioannes) -> Swedish (by Hunef) -> Finnish (by Jonne) -> English (by Liisi) -> Esperanto (by Passe-Cale) -> Spanish (by Strigo) -> English (by Stan) -> German (by Hubi) -> Dutch (by Sander) -> French (by Nounoursette) -> Spanish (by Zajacik) -> English (by Luis)

In order to make things more interesting, we'd need:
- at least 1 more person translating either from or to: Afrikaans, Arabic, Czech, French (Quebec), Latin, Portuguese, Russian or Slovak
- at least 1 more person translating TO: Catalan, Danish, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish or Slovenian
- at least 2 more people translating any language not yet mentioned

Looking good already, Jamesun :D

Is it your intention to reverse the previous order, or is it just a coincidence?

Did I? Must be a coincidence. We don't even have the same languages yet.
